I was diagnosed with diabetes around the time when I found out I was pregnant with my daughter. I had been sick and unhealthy not knowing what was wrong, and no doctor thought of checking me.

I guess the pregnancy made my blood sugars skyrocket enough that being hospitalized three times in one week for blood poisoning, flu symptoms and unknown stomach pain all in one week. after all this, a walk in clinic doctor finally tested me for diabetes. (and back to the hospital).

I had a healthy girl, now four and a half years old. now, I remember the risks I was told of when carrying my daughter - high blood sugars would lead to spinal damage of the baby, large growth, etc.

but what I also remembered was the doctor telling me there were high risks of carrying a second child, related to organ/liver or pancreas? damage on type 1 mothers, later in life from carrying a child. I dont' have this doctor anymore, and for the life of me can't find any information similar on the internet. I have never been told I have kidney damage or anything like that, that I can remember.

is there any risks that anyone else is aware of, of pregnancy or the effects of carrying the baby for the type 1 diabetic mother? other than uncontrolled blood sugars on a baby?

Has anyone purposely chosen not to have a child or another child because of their diabetes and health?

I'm surprised your doctor did not check you for diabetes - some doctors eh?!! Thank god the walk in doctor had sense to perform the test. Glad to hear you had a healthy daughter :top:

My husband & I want to try for a family, but I have a couple of health issues to overcome first, being high blood pressure (now I have borderling low pressure!) & protein in my urine (seeing the hospital next week about this). I have been told that you need excellent bs control, especially in the early stages, as this helps prevent the foetus developing abnormalities. But I have never heard there are high risks with the 2nd pregnancy & I know a few women who have had 2 or more babies. Maybe somebody else on here knows more than me but if you're healthy & have your diabetes under control I can't see there would be a problem. Have a chat with your doctor to put your mind at rest.

Good luck with everything...the medical bit & the fun bit :knuddel:

I had my daughter 12 years ago and yes, it is a risky pregnancy. I was under real good control, but I was never told that I could not have more children. I don't see if you have great control, before, during, and after; it being a problem. I had the same warnings of having high blood sugars. There are a few members on here that are T1 and have a few kids. Hopefully they will chime in soon.
I regret not having another child. I'm only 31 and my clock is ticking... lol (like Marissa Tomei in My Cousin Vinny).

When I heard that it was such a risk for me to have another kid, I wasn't very upset, as I only ever wanted one. then I became a single parent, and having a another one was not an option. But now that time has passed, I can't for the life of me remember WHY they said that.

I am more concerned now about why that is, I mean, if there was something wrong with me (and I was too stressed and frazzled with my life at the time to write it down), I should probably find out what it was. I mean, if there was a medical reason, like something wrong with my kidneys, or anything, I might have more problems with it in my life unrelated to pregnancy.

I was on actos for a while, which is potentially dangerous to a fetus, so I never thought about it. but now I am off all medications that may hurt the growth of a baby, and planning a marriage, it reminded me that there was some other reason.

I mean, what if I did want another kid? I am not in a position to be able to afford another child right now, not with diabetes medications as well, but I want to find out in case later I do want to go through it again.

Can you check your medical history records? If the doctor thought there was a high risk for you to go through a second pregnancy I would have thought he would have documented it. Let us know how you get on :)

thanks! I can't get a hold of them, there is a huge problem with this medical system here. before my current doctor, I had to start over each time.

I am going to talk to my doctor about this later next month.

My Endo was fine with me having Kids as long as my sugars were
under decent control. It was my other 2 Docs that were against it.
They must have heard horror stories from other Docs or books since
they knew very little about about Diabetes or of Diabetic women
having babies. One said if I had a second Baby that I'd go blind or/and
have Kidney failure. Well, my eyes were about the same afterwards
and my kidneys were fine. I'm not sure how many yrs. later you mean
by "later on". I was 27 when I had my Daughter. When you are pregnant
and Diabetic because you are high-risk, you are given more attention and
care. It's alot more stress on your body obviously. I wouldn't suggest
that you have a Baby at age 50, however. :D Best of Luck to you in
making your decision and for a Very Happy outcome.

Hi Playdoh.:hello: Sure you are allowed. You can interact and
