The Dr and Fasting

Next week will be my first visit since I have been diagosed.

My appt. is at 3:00...I know I need a fasting blood test...

Questions is what is considered fasting?? 4 hours? 12 hours? Do I just skip lunch?

I always make my fasting appointments for early in the morning. My doctor says to not eat after I have my Lantus shot before I go to bed, and make sure I am fasting at least 8 hours. For awhile, I thought having my black, unsweetened coffee, would not make a difference, but I guess it does. I was told to have nothing but water, not even my morning medications. So I make sure I get in as early as possible.;)

My bloodwork is always done real early and a week before my appointment.

I try to fast for 10 hours, but sometimes I forget and only make it 8 hours. One time I went 14 hours and my bg's were a little higher than normal, for me, for a fasting bg.

Are you assuming you are going to be tested right there in the office or were you told by the office you will have it done at your appointment. Usually, specialty offices see the patient then send them to a lab to get bloodwork when it is convenient for the patient. You might want to ask for sure if the labs are scheduled that day because you really don't want to fast unless you absolutely need to.

In the UK when we are told to have a fasting test it means don't eat anything for about 12 hours - i.e. approximately don't eat after the evening meal until the test is done. :albertein

If you are having a lipid profile (cholesterol, triglycerides) done then you should fast at least 12 hours. If you are only testing a fasting glucose for example 8 hours is enough.
