I was told that I could ask questions here...even ones that may sound silly to me. I find that after a nap, or even in the AM, or when I'm just sitting around not talking to anyone..I have a very sweet taste in my mouth. Mind you, I haven't eaten anything sweet. it's now 11:15 PM. I ate dinner at 7:00. Steak, 1/4 of a baked potato, salad/oil&vinegar, and a diet pepsi. My BS is at this moment, 182. I really can't figure this out at all. Prior to dinner, I had my 1000 mg Metformin, and 14 units of novalog 70/30 mix. Now i did eat in a restaurant, and asket if the steak was marinated. The answer was NO. I'm sort of in a quandry. Normally I have a snack to prevent any low bs in the night, but I don't see the need for it now. Back to my question....has anyone experienced this yucky sweet taste? Nancy

I've never had that "sweet taste" so I can't help you with that. However, I notice that you take your metformin before your meal. This should be taken with (or right after) food. Not only does this reduce any stmach problems, but more impotantly, metformin is about 50% more effective when taken with food. On an empty stomach, it will just pass through you without being absorbed.

Nancy,
This can be a few things, even though, I low-carb all the time, but I have never had this problem. Low carb/high protein diets can produce this. This is a sign that fat is breaking down at a rapid rate to be used as body fuel. This can also be a sign of your sugars running so high (Hyperglycemia). Either way, you should check with your doctor.
I also noticed you are on 70/30 mix, I consider this a very bad insulin, due to the fact it almost impossible to achieve ANY type of control with it.
Keep us posted....;)

isnt the sweet taste in mouth a symtom of ketones? i dont know where i heard this, but i heard it a couple times
I've had that taste before, when waking up- I think it is from higher blood sugars, the two are related for me, anyways.
~ psilocybin- the keytones are spilled when your bs is high, so I think they would go hand and hand.

It's been a rough day. Woke up with over 200, and then after 1 mile on my tredmill, I was at 304. I stayed high all day, but ate properly, and two hours after dinner I was at 96. Had a snack, and now...time for bed, I'm at 116. I tested for ketones this AM, and found "trace". I'm wondering if this weird taste has anything to do with the metformin. It has a sweetish taste to me. I have decided to seek out a doctor who specializes in diabetes. I will do that on Monday AM.:hmmmm2:

There are 2 reason why you may be having a sweet taste in your mouth. 1 is that your sugars are high and the other is that you may have ketones.
