I will start 5 mcg's of Byetta one shot in the AM just before breakfast for the next week then will add another dose at dinner time. Dr was very adament that I take it just before eating...meaning take shot then eat. no time inbetween. He says that will minumize side effects. because I will be traveling I will be in the 5 mcg dosage for the next 2 months..then will move to the 10.
I am a bit nervous. :afraid:

Reasons Dr prescribed this medication ...
while my A1C is still coming down from initial diagnosis of 10.7 last march {yes it will be one year} then 6.9 last july now down to 6.4 :proud: , my blood sugars are still high. a morinng fasting reading is still hovering around 150 . and 2 hours after dinner I have been spiking up to 180-200. and it seems to be consistant.
I am also as my kind Dr puts it rather fluffy. :marchmell and because Byetta seems to aid in weight loss...this is a double blessing for me.
SO while I am as I said more then a bit nervous, I am hoping for good results. I know it is not a cure because my diabetes will never go away...but I hope this is the answer to control.

Hi, I am wondering how you like the byetta? What exactly does it do or I guess, what is it's function? I'm on a drug called Maridia and it's supposed to do similar things but it's an oral medication. I've only been on it a week so I don't know if I've lost any weight but I I am certainly experiencing side effects...but not the ones they say. I wonder if byetta would be a better choice? If you can answer my questions great, if not the I wish you all the best.

Hi Liz,
I have not started Byetta yet..I am waiting for instructions from my diabetes councilor/nurse. But here is what I know so far....

* Byetta was recomemded by my Dr. I had never heard of it before Monday Feb 27th.
* My dr insists that I eat immediatly after taking the shot.
*Byetta must be refriderated. when I travel I have purchased a small insulated pack , althought I understand I will be recieveing one from the company that makes the drug.
* The drug works Glucophage ( metformin) or Amaryl, Glucotrol, Micronase.
* Byetta signals the pancreas to make the right amount of insulin at the right time keeping sugar levels closer to normal. It helps stop the liver form producing too much sugar when you don't need it. It helps slow down the rate sugar enters the bloodstream.

I hope this helps. I was diagnosed as a diabetic in March of 05. I'll post more as I learn more.

Thanks for the byetta info. My husband has problems with highs and lows
(Type 2), and I am going to do some research to see if I can find a doctor
who would prescribe byetta.

Anyone know where to locate such an endo:questionm
