Okay, I got my first A1c since Diagnosis as Type 2 -
at diagnosis I was 7.8 today. I am now at 5.9 Doc seems pleased...
but not with my
Trygl.... 162
total cholestrol 205
HDL 42
LDL at 131
Ratio 4.9
creatinine 1.3
there were about 20 other numbers on the panel, but apparently they were all within range....
any ideas about making this better, he but me on Vitorin, for the chol, but, I thought by runnning 30 miles a week, I would have no chol problem....:questionm

Cholesterol is as much heredity as it is lifestyle, so if eating bad foods contributed to higher cholesterol in someone, cutting those foods out would help. But if mom, dad, grandmas and grandpas all had cholesterol issues, diet and lifestyle modifications would require some additional help.
Your numbers look great, actually. Keep exercising and let's see how the Vytorin works out. Sounds like you are doing very well.

:dito: what duck said is true. I was put on Lipitor because as my Dr. said, bad genes. For me diet and exercise wasn't enough, HDL and LDL were slightly out of range. Keep up with the diet and exercise, you should see a change in those numbers. Great job on the A1C.

just got back from the webmd site, reading about Vytorin and cholesterol and all that stuff. In the last two years I found out about my COPD, my Hemachromastosis, my Diabetes, my sleep apnea and a hernia in my diaphragm/esophugus... this lifestyle change is WORK, but I am happy to have it compared to the alternative...
And Yes, you can have my A1c, I donate blood every 8-10 weeks thanks to one of the things above!!!!
Cheers...

Congratulations on a terrific A1C.
I walk 3 miles every night. I have been on Lipitor for over 6 years and my cholesterol still runs higher than my endo would like. It's definately heriditary!

Congrats on the great A1C Jeff!!
As far as the cholesterol, only thing I can suggest is eat oatmeal and drink a glass of red wine a day....not at the same time though:laugh:

Your A1C looks fabulous! Nice work.
I eat a (mostly) vegetarian diet (my roommate is a vegetarian, so meat is a rare indulgence) and eat a (generally) low fat diet with loads of veggies (lunch is usually veggie soup, a bag of chopped veggies, a piece of fruit and (maybe) peanut butter on crackers. Your genes do have a huge impact on your cholesterol though, and while certainly your running must help, if you aren't loading up on fruit and veggies or if your diet contains more fat than you think it should, dietary changes could help.
My brother (adopted), has a hereditary cholesterol problem that he was able to manage with exercise initially, but is now on medication that has helped him to control it. I think that you certainly want to maintain the health benefits of exercising and controlling your blood sugars, but the medication can help, and that's what it is there for.

I had to work hard to lower my cholesterol. I finally made it to what my doc wants. I had to learn to eat more chicken, turkey, and fish in my diet. Hard for someone raised on beef and pork. I also had to learn to walk alot. I try to do 1.6 miles 3 or 4 times a week. Boy I sure miss lunchmeat and pizza. And I was a couch potatoe for way too long.

I battle with cholesterol too. Bad genes! And it is recommended that we diabetics have a cholesterol level lower than 5. I find this issue (cholesterol) quite frustrating...
Excellent A1C! Keep up the good work.
