an endo that will prescribe the new drug, Byetta? My husband has sugar
highs (Type II, insulin controlled) that are difficult to control, and also has difficulty losing weight, partly because of having to take Actos. Thanks for any suggestions.

Does this mean your regular doctor will not prescribe it?

Call your local Endo's up and first ask if they are taking new people, and then ask them what the endo's views are for type 2 and byetta use. If they can't tell you , then as to set up a time you can have a meeting with the ENDO because you want to speak to him/her before switching over to him/her

Now I may be way off base but I thought Byetta was for type 2 who is not on insulin and the symilin (sp?) is for type 1 & 2 who are on insulin.

My husband's regular endo won't prescribe it. :(

Jeggeman, you are probably right...I am not that familiar with the difference
between Byetta and symilin. I recently read an article about Byetta but have
to research symilin. Thanks. :)

My doctor is a Type 1.5 and she takes it. :)

Jeggeman is right. Byetta is only for those not on insulin and taking oral meds. Symilin is for those taking Insulin.

What Do people taking both Insulin and Orals take I have no idea:questionm Which maybe why your doc will not prescribe it.

Byetta (http://www.byetta.com/index.jsp?reqNavId=0)

Symlin (http://www.symlin.com/pcg/who/default.cfm)

Read through the prescribing information. You may find something that excludes your husband until the drugs are tested further.

ON the American Diabetes Assosiation's web site there is a forum for diabetics. I post there as well in the type 2 forum. There are T2's using insulin and Byetta.

What are the reasons your current Dr will not prescribe Byetta?
I am in week 2 of usage. so far only mild headaches. Good luck.

The reason my husband's endo won't prescribe Byetta is because he
works for Kaiser Permanente, and they are very slow to try anything new.
We are, however, on the flexible choice plan, so we can go outside
of Kaiser to find an endo that is more agreeable to the idea.

You might ask your pharmacist. They may or may not be able to tell you, but you may find a regular doctor with a lot cheaper office visit than an Endo.

What is the most important information I should know about SYMLIN?
• SYMLIN is used with insulin to lower blood sugar, especially high blood sugar that happens after meals.
• SYMLIN is given at mealtimes. The use of SYMLIN does not replace your daily insulin but may lower the amount of insulin you need, especially before meals.
• Even when SYMLIN is carefully added to your mealtime insulin therapy, your blood sugar may drop too low, especially if you have type 1 diabetes. If this low blood sugar (severe hypoglycemia) happens, it is seen within 3 hours after a SYMLIN injection. Severe low blood sugar makes it hard to think clearly, drive a car, use heavy machinery or do other risky activities where you could hurt yourself or others.
• SYMLIN should only be used by people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes who:
• already use their insulin as prescribed, but still need better blood sugar control.
• will follow their doctor's instructions exactly.
• will follow up with their doctor often.
• will test their blood sugar levels before and after every meal, and at bedtime.
• understand how to adjust SYMLIN and insulin doses. (http://www.symlin.com/pdf/SYMLIN_Medication_Guide_B.pdf)

BYETTA is an injectable medicine used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. BYETTA is used with metformin or another type of antidiabetic medicine called sulfonylureas. It may also be used with a combination of metformin and a sulfonylurea. There are many antidiabetic medicines that contain a sulfonylurea. Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you are not sure if your antidiabetic medicine contains a sulfonylurea. (http://pi.lilly.com/us/byetta-ppi.pdf)

Doctors have more prescribing information than what I have access to. However I might get ahold of Symlin if I was taking it and taking orals and no insulin. Then if I was on insulin and given Byetta I would be asking Byetta. It's your health do what you want with it. The links are in the above post which obviously you did not check out.

Thanks, Harold.
Let me know if the Pharmacist give you any info. The alternative to this would be calling CDE's in your area. There is a CDE finder I can post a link to as well as an ENDO link finder. The CDE link would be better because all of them deal with diabetes where as not all Endo's deal with diabetes very well. Also many CDE's can prescribe meds as well as give advice.

I'd love a link to the CDE finder. I can call and ask them their views on Byetta, if they're taking new patients. Thanks again! :)
