Does anyone else have a problem with high bg's if you follow the typical carb count of French bread, which on the package I buy ( Albertson's supermarket daily fresh baked bread) is listed as 27 carbs for 2 oz? If I weigh the bread and use 15 carbs/oz I go really high. Yesterday I figured 24 carbs/oz and still went high. It seems to me that the carb count for me comes in over 30 carbs/oz. Is it just me??

Mmmm...french bread. It always makes me go high too. I just double my dose, or calculate that every 2inches is 10grams. That seems to work for me.

What is your carb/insulin ratio? Mine is 10:1

I can never get it right with Albertsons french bread, I always go high. I end up just taking a good chunk of insulin (maybe double the original calculated dose?) and hoping it works, sometimes it does, sometimes not. :dontknow: My ratio is 1:8 and 1:10.

LOL! I doubt I will, because each time I have some, I weigh it and increase the number of carbs per ounce from the previous time and STILL hit the mid 200's. What IS it with French bread?? The next time I'll figure 30 carbs per oz and see how that goes.

BTW, are we talking 2 hour readings, 4 hour, or what?

Many readings, between 45 minutes up to around 3.5 hours. French bread is just bizarre! All I know is 24 carbs per oz, figured at my ratio of 10:1 doesn't give me enough insulin to avoid getting high. It happens EVERY single time I eat French bread. Can't explain why the nutritional info doesn't seem "right", but as you can see, I'm not the only one with this problem. I don't put much stock in theory: I'm more into practical solutions to problems.

Yeah! That's why it tastes so yummy! :) Why is all the nutrional food no fun and all the bad stuff so tasty? God is playing a cruel trick on us! :)

Yep, this is true. Almost anything white is bad. Even though I have Italian bread (publix) and it doesnt spike me.
I don't weigh my bread, but 15 g / oz seems really low. I usually eat about a 4 inch sandwich on French bread when I eat it. That runs me around 40 - 50 grams (depending on how wide the bread is) I haven't run into trouble, except once or twice when a bread was really airy (air pockets etc) and I took too much. Since then I take a bite before I bolus.
OH~ the French are out to sabotage diabetics! :listen:

French bread is easy! Can't avoid it, although at home we eat wholemeal,.. Its 56% carb. It is quite light,I seemed to have to eat tons of it when in hospital after diagnosis as its the main carb with most meals .
Apparently French nutritionists were outraged when told that their bread was almost as high a GI as glucose and said that the bread used was not proper French bread. Maybe they have a point.
Re reading the thread I'm a bit confused as to what unit you use for carbs.... 30 carbs per oz
I use grams of carb per gram of food.

I use grams of carb per gram of food. That doesn't work unless you are eating pure sugar. Most foods, even high carb ones, have less than one gram of carb per gram of food.
For instance, with the white "american" bread I eat, two slices are 41 grams with 21 grams of carb according to the label. The remaining weight is protein (3 grams), fat (1 gram), "ash" - inorganics like salt, and mostly water.

Seacombe, of course you're right.. I had to go and didn't recheck my post. I meant the number of gms of carb per 100 gms of food. Carbs are noted without the fibre content which I believe is different to in the US.(not that there's much in French bread!) Its easy here as everythng in Europe is marked in metric units. what I was querying what the 30 per oz was... ie what unit was the 30?

I eat "finish baking at home" french bread. A baton is 70g of carb which I dose for without a problem.

Ok, now we understand we other. Carbs even in non-metric US are always
quoted in grams. The only comparable english measure is the "grain" which no one knows or uses.
