Hey Cossie, ya you do really need all the gear..a meter and lancet (priker) arn't that bad or that costly. The strips cost you but as it concerns your health, it's worth it. The only way to know how things are going and if you're getting your food requirements right is to test. If you're new to this it may seem overwhelming but that quickly goes away and becomes old hat.

They should be free, if not ask them to give it to you free. Most companies know that they make the money off the strips and not the meters. Most are willing to give you one. If not call meter companies, I'm sure they'll give you one free. Oh, and ask all the questions you like, 'cause this is a great place to find all your answers.

I got mine for free... but I bought an inexpensve one as a backup too. It takes more blood and hurts... so I don't use it much.

I would not be able to control my sugar levels at all well without a meter and pricker.
The rule under the UK National Health is that they do not pay for the meter or the pen (pricker) but they do pay for lancets and strips. However, I did get my complete testing kit free from my doctor because the rep for the manufacturer left some with the surgery to be handed out. If I were you I would ask your doctor and/or the diabetes nurse at your practice.

Thanks. Is this the thing that gives you free prescriptions etc? If it is, I get everything free anyway, because I'm over 60. :elefant: :thrasher:

I would imagine any diabetes center or doctor could get you a meter for free. Log on and get a free one. I got a free one for filling out a survey, but the strips do cost you.
