Hey fellow pumpers,

I just got hooked up to a CGMS and was wondering if there are any tips or precautions our group could share. I am trying to get my pump fine tuned so I can regain some lost control and varying numbers. Any info you can share would be great.

Thanks again

What did you get, how does it feel...?

I don't understand your question but it is a bit bulky in size and the cable is not too long. Getting sleep last night was a chore. Sort of reminded me of when I first starting pumping. The needle doesn't hurt at all which is a plus.

If you want to restate your question as to what I got, I will be more than happy to answer.

Just make sure that you Calibrate or else there is not much that the reports can do for you and the 3 day's would have been a waste.

CGMS

Continual Glucose Monitoring System. Also know as the Guardian. CGMS does not have a screen to view the numbers but the Guardian does. That is the only difference in the 2.

It is used for Doctors and Patients to get better control and is usually worn for 3 full days. It is similiar to a Pump (Wire, Injections etc.) The part that goes into your skin has a small sensor that takes a BG reading every 5 min, it is a way to see how your BG reacts between meals and night shifts with hormones. A great way to set up basal's on pumps as well as to discover the reasoning around low and high numbers.

Hey Vic L. Your from AUSTIN! Me too. Have you checked out our Forum on the Diabetes Documentary? If your interested in possibly taking part or being one of the actors let me know. I didn't know there were anybody else from Austin on here. I don't know anyone in this town that has Diabetes. Makes me feel good to know that others are around me :)

Oh yeah, I usually test between 7 & 9 times a day so the calibration should be good to go. I am eating like normal and not eating low carb meals. I want to see the real numbers. I don't want to be a perfect diabetic when using this device.

sorry, I guess I was a bit too stingy with my words. I'm wondering if it's the MiniMed and does the sensor irritate your tissues?

That is the best way to do it. You don't want to cheat the system or else it would have been for nothing. Good Luck :)

Doetsch,

You'll have to point me in the right direction to read up on the Diabetes Documentary. Is it listed on this forum? I'm interested, it would be fun.

I'm a cubicle monkey too!

Spike,

Yes, the CGMS I am using right now is made by Minimed. So far I haven't had issues but I am very conscious of the area. They made me sign like 4 forms just to drill into my head " If you break it, you'll pay". As far as irritation, can't say I had any yet but then again I just started last night.

thanks! Even though you just started, it's a good sign I think, because when I tried a Sil set it hurt immediately and after 3 hours I jerked that darn thing out and went back to Quick Sets. Please keep us updated.

Just an update

My time with the CGMS came and went and I really look forward to my appointment this Friday. I will have a review of the results at that time. The time I spent connected to it was un-eventful so there was no need to call Minimed for an error or any site irritation. I just hope the results will help me get my A1C down further. It was an 8 in January.

Vic, please update us with any follow on info. I'm interested in trying the Guardian myself. I've been pumping for 5 1/2 years but am still stuggling with basal rates, insulin carb sensitivity, etc. Also, I'm interested in pursuing the MM 722 when it becomes available in the U.S. It's like a Gurardian that talks directly to the pump.

Actually, the 722 is the 300U capacity pump that receives signals from the optional CGMS.

Hi Vic...:hello:

I recently also went on a CGMS. It was an interesting experience... and I think an overall good one :top:. Seeing the graphs and how dramatically my blood sugars rise and fall was really eye opening. I think you will be surprised at your own results. It is exciting to see how your blood sugar reacts at different times of day :)

However, saying that, I have to say that I expected a little bit more from using this system :dong: . I thought it might help with making adjustments to my basal/bolus rates. Ok, yes, it might tell you that a certain rate may need to be adjusted at a given point of day, but it won't tell you how to adjust it. I thought it might also help with my blood sugar problem during the evening, especially regarding exercise. It did give me a little more insight on what goes on during this time of the day, but it didn't tell me how to adjust things or how to fix them  . Basically, overall, it didn't really tell me anything I didn't know already. But I guess that's to be expected. For wearing it only for a 3 day period, it's hard to draw conclusions. As we all know, this disease can be very unpredictable and each day is completely different from the next.

Anyway, I hope that your experience using this tool is useful to you and does result in improving your control. I think that's really what we all are after. :top:

Keep us posted

am1977,

I have high hopes for the results but from your reply you could get the same info by testing a lot. I really hope the results assist me because I tried to eat different types of food to see the effect on my sugar. We'll see.

thanks for your reply.

Yeah, testing a lot would give you a lot of info too, but I think you might be able to see a little more with CGMS. I hope you learn a lot from this experience :)
