How does dx at a young age (3) affect growth? Taylor seems to be hungry all the time and I know that excess weight can really complicate diabetes. I just feel so awful when she whines about being hungry, but I know she is getting plenty to eat.:eating:

I see that you have a couple of kids so you have a comparison as to what they eat. One thing that can cause hunger is low BG. Are Taylor's ok?
There can be throid complications with T1, if the symptoms persists it may worth going to an Endo.
The best to you and your little one.:)

Well, I too have a young one Clayton Type 1 and what we do when we hit these stages is to make jello...with Gelatin ( sugar free of course) and let him chew on that. They are fairly thick and he has to chew it and he can have lots and that helps us. We give no carb food in between meals like celery cheese, dill pickles..
Maybe try this if she is hungry. I think it is only natural for her to be hungry, she is a growing girl. Has she gained alot of weight??? What does your endo think??

I've heard that going to either extreme can make you feel hungry... And I have personally experienced that as well . How are her blood sugar levels? Are they relatively stable?

Couple of other things... How balanced are her meals? If she is eating purely carbohydrates, that can cause hunger to come back relatively quickly... I've read that Protein actually could help with satiety. So you might want to offer her low fat cheese, a few nuts, or something like that.

Also, is she getting enough water? It may be that she's thirsty more than hungry. A good idea would be to keep bottled water, Crystal lite, or some of those lite juices (sugar free) on hand for her to have when she's feeling hungry.

Has her insulin needs changed? I think sometimes if you are on too much insulin :nurse:, you may feel hungry.

It also could just be that she is growing and her caloric needs have increased? It may be a good idea to meet up with a registered dietician to find out what you can do to make sure she is eating healthy and feeling satisfied.

Hope this helps somewhat :)

Taylor is a little tall, but really quite average in size. Her blood sugars are really leveling out esp. with her new pump. She averages between 100-200 which is where the endo wants her at this age.
She has breakfast, lunch and a snack at school and USDA regulations are strictly enforced. Also the school dietitian heavily restricts serving processed foods. Most of what is eaten at school is homemade using fresh fruits and vegetables as often as possible. At home, I try to be diligent in what I serve as well. I rarely cook anything that comes from a box. Snacks are generally fresh fruit, cheese, natural applesauce, lite yogurt, s.f. jello, etc. Oh, and the girl LOVES salami! Not too much though cause of the fat and salt. She drinks plenty of water. It just seems as if she can't get enough of anything. She eats as much as my 12 yr old and she wants a snack within 10 minutes of dinner. I swear she is part hobbit! Sorry for rambling, but I just want her to feel satisfied.
