Lately I have been having cramping and muscle knots in my upper arms and shoulders....I have been fighting for control..but I am still in the low 300's
Are the high numbers responsible for the muscle aching and weakness?
Anybody..anyone?:frown:
It can be...When I used to go through periods of not controlling my sugars (back when I lifted weights 6x a week), my strength would get sapped (and bored out by my record-keeping) and I would cramp badly, but not when working out (weird).
I need to check into why that happens when we are high, though.

I am constantly fighting knotting muscles in my shoulders, neck and arm. It got so bad it evolved into frozen shoulder for me. In fact, I just asked my wife to pick up a script for some flexeril (muscle relaxer) for me on her way home. I'm at wits end with this as it's been going on for at least 1/2 a year. :(
Could be. Being that high dehydrates you, and being dehydrated messes with your electrolyte balance, and messed up electrolytes cause muscle pain / cramping. Drink lots of water, and maybe that fitness water stuff (just make sure it doesn't have sugar / carbs). That should take the edge off while you work on getting those numbers under control.

One of the things that I have a problem with is drinking too much diet soda. I actually have been wanting to give up my diet Mt. Dew habit, which is probably up to a 6 pack or more a day, and replace it with water. I have also been on a low carb diet for a long time and have not been taking vitamens religiously. Now that I'm on the pump, gatoraide is no longer off-limits and I am introducing a higher carb diet into my lifestyle as I fine tune the pump. I'm definately willing to try some electrolytes and water.
I gotta get off the soda. More water, more water, more water...

You're not the only one with a diet soda habit ...
"Hi, my name is Andrea...and I'm addicted to diet Coke/Pepsi"... lol.
Actually, it really isn't funny. I am trying to kick the habit myself and it hasn't been easy. I mean, the stuff really isn't good for you. It's really all chemicals and has no nutritional value- it's not exactly a health food :thumpdown.
I'm slowly trying to ween myself off of it and I have made some progress. During the work week, I limit it to two 20 oz bottles a day (I know that may still seem like a lot to some), but in the past I would have 2 or 3 of those at work and then come home and have 2 more. That's an awful lof of diet soda . Now I just have the two and drink water (blech :eviltongu) the rest of the day.
On the weekends, I allow myself to be a little more liberal with it all. But I'm thinking I might have to change that too- b/c when Monday comes around I feel like I'm back at square one, and that's not good. I guess one step at a time....:creep:...
Good luck. sorry for going OFF TOPIC :topic:

Yeah...you need to sort that out. You need to about 200mg/dl lower than that, as a maximum. If you're consistantly running that high then you're probably majorly in ketoacidosis, which means your body is quite literally eating itself.
Firstly I'd recommend making a really serious effort to get your BG back to a safe level. If you're still having muscle cramps when you're under 130 then it's probably something else, but at least then you'll be generally healthier anyway.

Before I was diagnosed I would be awakened at 5 am with severe cramps in my calves. Basically when you are high, your body tries to eliminate the excess glucose via urination. That in turn dehydrates you and cause potassium depletion which then causes cramping.

Low potassium certainly does cause night leg cramps! OUCH! OWWW!:frown:

I used to get the worse cramps in my calves in the morning in bed, before I was diagnosed and when I was just starting to try and handle my diabetes. Now I know why I had them and why I don't anymore. Interesting...

Just to add a voice....
Whenever I'm high, i feel like **** too. My muscles tighten and seem to get stiff, even if I haven't really gone to the bathroom alot.
I also feel like I'm having heartburn or something acidy in my throat...........
So yes, get your numbers under control and you will feel a lot better.......

I was so delusional I thought my calves were cramping due to a change in my workout routine. No amount of stretching helped! Of course I also thought the 16 lbs. I lost without much effort were due to said change in workout routine. DELUSIONAL!!! LOL!!!

Sorry for the late reply to this, but I wanted to add something.
I am SO glad to see other people write about this. I have fought the same thing off and on.
Diet Mt. Dew is evil - and something I love :)
Here is a suggestion (it is what I do:)
Go to Walgreens and get a bottle of the Walgreens brand pediatric electrolyte.
Get the clear unflavored (it has no sugar in it.)
I mix it with regular bottled water - it is packed with minerals etc. It tastes lousy and you dont need to drink it straight.
One bottle costs me $3.99 and lasts a week or so. If you are looking to replenish your body - for me that is a good way to do it.
I mix it roughly 20% electrolyte 80% water in a water bottle. Not EVERY water bottle - just one a day.
Caffeine dehydrates us
High BG dehydrates us
Smoking dehydrates us
Those are 3 things we can control, so I use the "home made super water" to help me in that.
I would like to drink Propel etc. but all of them contain sugar :/

I had cramps in my calves a couple of months before I was diagnosed. And I was drinking litres of water a day due to the extreme thirst.....so the dehydration is definitely the prob..and the cause is the high bs. I remember also thinking it was due to stress and exercise.
Once I was diagnosed it took awhile to get my blood sugars lowered, through meds and a radical reduction in carbs for a short period. Now that I'm in control, I can have higher carb intake as long as I balance my exercise to go along with it (even without necessarily having to bolus before breakfast and lunch).
good luck!
