I still wish they would revamp their strips a little to take a little less blood and possibly even make them so they work 99% of the time. On occasion, maybe twice a week, I still get the error 5 (not enough blood.)

I agree with you on this. Hopefully they will fix the strip deal.

I decided to pull up the FDA approval on the Ultra 2 and it was a small laugh. Basically it was approved within a month of them submitting it for review and the FDA said since it was "substantially equilavalent in design" to the One Touch Ultra that there was no need for further testing.

I just saw the advertisement page for this meter in Diabetes Forecast, but it gives little information on it.

Oooo...that I look forward to.

What I would really like to see is strips that take less blood. 1 ul is not cutting edge anymore.

What I really don't get about this is, if you want before and after meal averages and a backlight, why not get the ultrasmart? You can really get either one for free, then the strips cost the same amount.

I ALWAYS get a large drop of blood to make sure I have enough but I get the error 5, too. I know it's not because of too little blood because of the large drop I start with. The stupid window is full, so it must be something else.

I sometimes touch the finger to the strip while the code is still on screen and get an error. That annoys me as well.

That I have done.. When you start on a fresh bottle of strips (or every 25 tests) it makes you press OK to verify the code. I've applied a sample during this time and wasted a test..

Overall though, I really like my Ultrasmart. It has a 3000 test memory, and I almost never get any errors during a test. I've been trying out a Flash, and last night I didn't get that much blood, but I thought OK, lets see how well this flash works. Applied the sample, and it started the test, but the result seemed too high. Retested with the Ultrasmart, then again with the Flash (larger sample), got a result 40 mg/dl lower than the first test with the small sample. That worries me.

Now that I see there are new meters coming out from Lifescan, I'll probably just end up staying with them. For me, when I prick myself, I tend to either bleed enough for a 1 uL sample, or not at all. When I was using the Flash's lancing device, I had to try 3 times in a row with it set to max depth and the opaque cap to get any sample at all from my fingers.

Oh, I was reviewing the manual from the Ultra2 and here are a few highlights:

-500 test memory (75 on Ultra1)
-You can label a test pre or post meal AT THE TIME OF THE TEST, rather than having it on a time schedule.
-You can add notes to a test at the time of the test too.
-Nicer screen (similar to UltraSmart screen)
-Averages viewable from meter

Yes, the Ultrasmart has most of these already, but for those that want the slightly smaller size and less complexity of the Ultra, this is good.

Can't wait to see what the Ultrasmart 2 looks like..

Once in a while I don't get enough blood on an US strip, but with the strip having a light colored channel, it's easy to see if you have filled it 100%.

I looked back at the conversation and you did mention it but we got side tracked discussing the older Lifescan meters so you never posted the link. LOL.:D Besides, I know that we talked about it, I was just wanting to see if others had seen it.

Meh, just giving you a hard time. ;)

The rep. told me that they were going to release two new meters this summer....guess this was the first of the two. The Ultra 2 seems like a cross between the Ultra & UltraSmart. I agree that it would be even more awesome if they could make the strip to where it waited till enough blood was applied, so less waste would occur. Some online stores are currently running specials on the Ultra 2 (free meter with purchase of strips, or rebates given...).
