I was just wondering if it was just me or others having trouble falling asleep. It takes me forever to fall asleep when my sugar is around 100 whitch it usually is so it takes a while for me to fall asleep every night. But if my sugar is 130-150 or higher i fall right asleep. Just curious.

Yep, I have that problem. If Im under 5 mmol I find it very difficult to get to sleep, I think its my brain telling me Im going to go low in the night.

Could it be that your worry about your BGL keeps you awake?

I've talked with 2 other diabetics that have this same problem, and I used to have this too. It was so long ago I forgot how I fixed it(for me), until reading this post for some reason.
There was this little experiment in highschool that was pretty popular amongst the kids. If you tell yourself before you go to sleep, "I will wake up after every dream", like a little montra before bed (there is a specific amount of times but I dont recall, maybe like 10?) you will start to wake up after every dream. It's more annoying than anything else. I took that same theory and did it with "I will wake up if I am going low", to this day, almost 17 years later I never, ever think about saying that to myself anymore and still will wake up instantly if I go low.

I fall asleep instantly when I lie down....just do not stay asleep. The longest I sleep at a time is 5 hours and that is rare, usually it it an hour or two. I have been checking BS when I wake, and it is almost always low normal. Asked the doctor about it and he said most people over 50 have sleeping problems....guess I am just getting old!

Oh ****! That doesnt bode well for me in a few years :D
i tend to struggle to sleep if i am low, but if my BS level is ok, i am fine

I have a very hard time falling asleep if I am <80, like others here have mentioned. It's probably because the body senses a drop in bg and the adrenaline gets pumping as part of the hypo counteraction. Maybe this is what is happening to you, though at 100 your body shouldn't think it's low...unless you are recently diagnosed and have been running high for a while? then your body will take some time to adapt to lower numbers.

Same problem here. Ever since becoming a diabetic, I have serious sleeping problems. especially so if I am low, but also if I am high.

I fall asleep like a log if I am running high; last night, I was a bit low and I was awake for most of the night; when I woke up this morning, I think my liver had dumped and I was around 10.
I definitely sleep soundly when high, have trouble sleeping when low. Oh, the joys.

I can't sleep if my BG is below 6 or above 9. When it's below 6 I tend to feel really 'empty' and then my body just won't take 'no' for an answer. When I'm above 9, I feel 'groggy' but I just can't seem to drift off.
I think why you can't sleep is part of your body's natural defences - it's picked up that you might have a potential problem during the night so it won't let you sleep until you resolve it. So I either eat something or take a few u's of insulin, depending on the situation. Solves the problem.

I will do the same when I'm running a little low and it's time to hit the sack.
I will usually take a few glucose tabs to get the bg up quickly to where I want it, then eat small snack of fat and protein to last through the night. The fat and protein takes longer to digest than carbs and gives me a sense of security. The small snack for me is usually 1 or 2 slices of lunchmeat and cheese. Although I hate feeding insulin, it sure beats not sleeping or even worse going low while sleeping.
 I have been Type1 for 13 years and I haven't slept through a night since. It doesn't matter what my blood sugar is, I test when I am awake, 2,3am. I fell like I haven't been in a deep sleep in so long. the funny thing is, if I take a nap during the day, like on a Sunday afternoon, I sleep very deeply. My Dr can't figure it out. i have been afraid of going on a sleep med because of night-time lows. Does anyone take a real sleeping pill and do you worry about not waking up if you go low?

And if I sleep during the day (only real deep sleep I can get) no more sleeping at night... :(

Hmmm--interesting. I just figured out that when I'm dropping I'm WIDE AWAKE! I don't have to have the sweats or shakes--I can't get back to sleep in the middle of the night--I test--I'm at 66. Drink a little juice, and drop back off again. Weird how that works. . .
