Do you subtract fiber from your carbohydrate count before determining your insulin needs?

I subtract NOTHING or add NOTHING to my carb count. I look at the Total Carbs on what I'm eating, figure out how many servings I'm having, and do the math.

What Jedi said! I personally suspect most people have a particular "lifestyle" and strong preferences when it comes to food that ends up being fairly consistent with lots of fiber, average fiber or low fiber, so whatever effect it had would get figured into their I:C ratios. Or, maybe not...

You need a "depends" option. I subtract it over 5 grams, since then it actually effect my bolus. Otherwise it doesn't, so I don't bother.
Same here, only if it is over 5 grams or so and what it is i'm eating.

I do the same as you :)

Wow, I didn't even consider that as an option...
So less than 5 grams of fiber you don't subtract any fiber grams from the carb count, but more than 5 grams you subtract all the fiber grams from the carb count?

Correct, that's exactly what I do.

I'll let you do that and report. I'm glad you like a challenge. I do it the easy way--subtract fiber no matter how many. It's not easy to find more than 5 gms in anything.

I've never thought to add them, fibre and carbs are listed separately in Europe. According to my little book there are several veg with no carbs and some fibre but I don't think that you would be happy gorging on chilli, cucumber, cress and celery and bamboo shoots!

CARBS ONLY. Ihave never had any problems so why fix something that is not broken.
I'm with the "it depends" people. I only subtract it if I'm eating something (like beans) that have a high % of their carbs from fiber. And only then if I'm eating a LOT of that one thing.

Why do some people only subtract the fiber from the carb count sometimes? Wouldn't your body process the fiber the same whether you eat a lot of it or a little of it?

I subtract becuase that's what my nutritionist said to do. She also said the more fibre the better. It seems to work but once I switch to mdi at the end of the month I guess I'll have a better idea.

I just recently learned that people can do that! :) But, I heard that it has to be 5 or more grams of fiber in order for you to do that. Sadly, not many foods have that full of an amount except for maybe like fruits and veggies. But, their servings already have the fiber math done.

i just free ball it...
lots of fiber...mabye .5 - 2 units less...all depends on the fiber/carbs

Body process the same, yes. But the difference it actually makes on your Blood sugar changes drastically depending on how much you're actually eating. Think of it this way... would you bolus if you ate 1 M&M candy? No. Would you bolus if you ate a BAG of M&Ms? Yes. Your body processes the singular candy the same as it processes the whole bag, but you don't need to change your insulin dose if you're eating a tiny amount. Same concept with fiber.
If something has 29 grams of total carbs and 1 gram of it being fiber, i would bolus the same. (what's one gram amongst friends?)
If something has 70 grams of total carbs, with 20 grams of it being fiber, I have to subtract it or I'll go hypo. (there is a 2 unit difference there)
