Insulin reaction symptoms?

Guess I should have called it false insulin reaction systoms.

I awoke the morning of April 10th just after 6:00 a.m. to the sympoms of a prolonged and intense insulin reaction. As soon as I could, I grabbed my meter off the night stand (fortunately, Brandy hadn't knocked it off to wake me) but the meter showed my glucose to be 85 so I'm a bit confused by what happened. As bad as I felt, I thought the meter would read somewhere between LO and maybe the mid-30's. I treated what I thought was an insulin reaction anyway but an hour later, my blood sugar was 175. I took 15 units of NPH the night before at 10:02 p.m. and for me it seems to peak about 9 hours after injection. I didn't start treating the reaction until after I had checked my blood sugar. Anyone have any ideas as to what might have happened?

Gee Whiz LG, sorry to hear that. You may very well have had a reaction.
Over here 85mg is 4.7mmol. That is not low low but your liver helped you
out giving you some glucose after a reaction. It's been some time since
I've had a reaction but my sugar can be 2.6mmol/45mg(us)when I wake up.
I can tell if I have had a reaction at that number if I feel real bad. I know my
sugar is on the way up but I get something to drink/eat anyway to help relieve
the systoms faster. If it is 4.7 and I feel bad I also know I've had a
reaction but I've been asleep long enough that my liver has sent out glucose.
I always wondered, "Why couldn't it send it BEFORE the reaction"?:hmmmm:
I can also be any of the above numbers and feel fine or perhaps a little weak
and shakey. Weak and shakey gets immediate drink or food.

I've never been on NPH so I don't know if the action of it is similar to mine.
I'm on Lente which works good for me most of the time. I was wondering if
you take 2 shots of NPH a day. If so, why are you taking 15 units at night?
With my Lente, I take 12 or 13 units when I get up and 7 units in the evening.
Mine also peaks at 9 hrs. But then again I've never looked up NPH.

My "real" symptoms of reaction(only when I've been asleep and I'd say bad
one)can be any or all of the following:

1. Splitting headache
2. Sweaty
3. Chilled to the bone
4. Definite sweaty smell(maybe even acidity odor)(Definite shower after I warm
up and feel better). :)
5. Feels like missing a tiny part of my brain(disoriented)
6. Woosey/Yukky
7. Maybe nausea
8. Weak

"False" reaction(not many for me):

1. Dizzy
2. Weak
3. Low on sugar feeling, but not.

All I can think of right now.

Hope that you are doing much better. I'm glad to hear Brandy
is still around. :thumbsup: Hopefully, for a Long time.

Sorry to hear your "Phantom feelings", as they call it. I have had this happen and it has been other reasons, such as low BP at times.

Could you entertain the possibility that the meter reading was wrong?

It's possible the meter was wrong, I just don't know. With that in mind, I opened a new vial of strips and lowered the NPH by 1 unit and I got a reading of 88 this morning with no symptoms (I see I misspelled symptoms in the earlier post, oh, darn!). It may very well have shown my glucose was higher than it actually was.

Usually, the simplest explanation is the correct one. :)

You could have been low and had a massive dump from your liver to bring yourself up again thus you caught the rebound.
