I know we all hate this lovely disease and would not wish it upon our worst enemy but.....

If you had a chance to trade this disease for another, what other disease would you pick?

A Dr. told me when I was first diagnose. Out of all the diseases, he said your better off with Diabetes. Because you can control Diabetes.

No matter how rough this can be at times, I will stick with the big D.

I tend not to think of it as a disease but more of a lifestyle i need to live, cant think if I had the choice what I would change it for, I can see why you posed th e question but I take my hat off to anyone who can give a straight answer.

I'd be happy to trade it for sexual addiction. (Guess I shouldn't have said that on Easter.)

I guess in reality, I don't know of any "good" diseases to have. All have their drawbacks, some so much worse than others. As Tony said, you can at least control diabetes but even so, it still does an awful lot of damage to people.

In light of what other diseases can do and the havoc it wrecks on peoples lives and family's I'd still rather deal with diabetes. As long as I do my part it doesn't effect anyone other than me.

The big D was a wake up call for me. It has actually helped me to improve the overall quality of my life. I do pray I never get severe complications. As long as I can control it and as long as there is hope for a cure, I'll also stick with this incurable disease rather than some other where I have less control...

Better the devil you know . . .

I have been living with diabetes for 15 years--it is a part of who I am now. I know the risks, the routines and am generally comfortable with them. As others have said, at least diabetes is manageable. I would take this over so many other diseases and will continue hoping that my efforts to control it help me to continue to avoid complications.

Hmmm :hmmmm:....I have thought about this before and have thought, yeah, maybe I'd change for something else, but when I try to think of what to trade it for, I can't decide :dontknow:. Maybe hyper or hypo thyroidism...that seems relatively easy to handle. Not much to do for it other than check your thyroid levels periodically and take medication. It doesn't require all the monitoring, discipline, and work that this disease requires...not to mention aggravation :argh:. Well, that's my opinion anyway.

I believe I will stick with the big D. In my family, we have a history of cancer, heart disease and my grandma had Parkinson's. Diabetes is manageable.

Before I was diagnosed, I knew something was up and it mostly pointed to diabetes. But I had been donating blood regularly and thought I might have depleted my iron. That would have been an easy fix! Also, thyroid disorders run in my family and as far as I know, that involves taking a thyroid pill everyday.

So if I had a choice of another autoimmune disorder, I'd pick thyroid. Although being that it runs in the family and having one autoimmune disorder makes you prone to others, I may end up with it AND the diabetes. :P

Have another desease and nothing I can do for it. No cure, and the treatment my doctor will not give me because it's too horrible. Thankfully I can do something about this one.

I totally agree with Tony here. I've witnessed both family members & friends who suffered severely from Cancer, and my mother-in-law had Parkinson's (she also had Type II Diabetes, but the Parkinson's was far worse & was responsible for her dimentia. :( ). I always say I'd Never trade my Diabetes for anything...at least with it, I'm in the driver's seat (so to speak) & in control of my own destiny (to a degree, anyway).

I'm with you Harold. I have a medical condition that is extremely rare (I am the 4th patient in my province to be diagnosed with it). There is NO treatment for it and the last study/clinical trial/investigative research done on it was 15 YEARS AGO. My diabetes can be managed and that's all that matters.

I have Cancer and Heart disease, I wouldn't want any of you to go through either of them. I think the the cancer was the worst thing that ever happened to me, and I would much rather deal with Diabetes the rest of my life, that to have the cancer back, even for a short time.

I wouldn't trade it for another disease.

But if someone told me, would you prefer living 75 years with Diabetes, or die at 50 and lead a healthy life I'd take the latter.

Not me...then I'd only have 7 1/2 years left!

Does something like gout count as a disease? Because i would take that any day. As painful as it would be, with modern medicine i would much rather deal with that probably only a few days a year than be carrrying diabetes around with me 24-7-365.

I hate to be that guy, but i would pick gout anyday over db. But all in all, db isnt so bad either.

I looked to see how old you are Pitzi, but since I am 59, your idea doesn't sound too hot to me! I worked hard and struggled all my life, was looking forward to a nice easy old age, look what I got.....it's not easy to be old and sick!

Em, I would keep Diabetes rather than trade.

It's something I can control. Treatments are getting better every day (results in 5 seconds, come on!)

Think about it. If you are on MDI and shoot up 5 times a day and test 5 times a day; then that's LESS than 10 minutes a day to manage / stay on top of.

And I imagine if you're plugged into a pump; even less time.

For me, it's been 20 years and I am not unhappy with the situation. I eat whatever I want (within reason) and I feel/appear to be in reasonable health. Except I would like to slim down a bit.

Oh, and I am SO over being 40.

It has to be Brain Damage!!! :) I blew the math on my reply. It is 9 yrs until I've been a diabetic for 75 yrs...... I'll be 75 in 4 yrs Either way I'll take the 75 year option

I am turning 29 in august. This condition has robbed me of the best years of my life, as I started being sick when I was 16. I would have rather preferred being born with it rather than knowing a normal life and then seeing it being blown upside down overnite

pitzi~ I am 28 and was diagnosed when I was 16. I don't feel that I've missed out on things or been robbed. Why do you feel so strongly?I had a lot of complications and spent a lot of time sick or in hospital. mainly due to useless doctors i might add. I have only found a reasonable amount of quality of life over the past year or so, once I managed to sort out my own body's requirements myself.

I am intolerant to half of the foodstuffs out there, my pancreas has shut down all it's other functions as well. I think I have a very rare form of diabetes. It's been a wild rollercoaster ride to sort out my digestive system and keep the BG under control. I dont look back at the last 10 years of my life with much joy to be honest.
