I took everyones advice and didnt give up.
I called all 3 pump companies and aked them for a doc recomendation

Cozmo (which was my first choice) called me back within 3 hrs after I called them, They are the ones that told me about the endo I just went to yesterday. I told cosmo how the visit went and he told me that if the dr said I didnt need one there is nothing that he can do and I told him that I knew that, but is there another dr that he could refer me too and he said I was pretty much out of luck.
So I got off the phone and called animas
They gave me a # to a lady. I left her a message and within 25 min she called me back. She is very nice and she wears a pump also and the dr that she refered me to is very pro pump as the the dr wears a pump also...hmmmm sounds good so far. So I called the dr office and made an appointment for May 9th.
The lady that refered me to the endo said that she would be very very very suprised if I didnt get the pump just by what I told her over the phone..

Animas and cosmo was a toss up the only reason I liked cosmo more was because it held more in the resivior

So I guess its the animas for me

I'm not trying to talk you out of Animas, but even if the endo leans toward one pump co. over another, they should allow you to chose your pump. There is nothing wrong with Animas, but I went Cozmo for the larger reservoir and the attached meter.

Congrats on finding another endo. It's not fair, though. I made an appt. with an endo about a week ago, and you'll get to see your endo waaaaay before I get to see mine!

Anyway I do wish I had a 300 unit reservoir, however I don't mind changing ever other day. It is no big deal to me if I go 1 1/2 to 2 days on my 200 unit reservoir or if I change it every 2 1/2 to 3 days.


I hope you find the end of the road soon and get to be part of the pumpers club...... O wait that was the breakfast club..... :D

Congrats on the pump. I don't see going with Animas as a bad choice if you have to. I actually see it somewhat positive in a sense and here is why.

You are on an extremely large amount of insulin. There is no pump currently that will hold close to the amount you need in 3 days. If you continue taking 110+ units a day even on the pump then in 3 days you will take 330 units (simple math so far.)

Now think of this, the Animas cartridge is technically 186 units at max (that's the most I've gotten out of one) and the Cozmo would be 300 max (since I've never used one I'm not sure how much you'd get out.) There is about 15 units used in priming and preparing the cartridge for use. That means in a day you need 125+ units, but still hopefully less than 150, even 186 (as my next point will show.)

I have successfully used Animas cartridges 3 times before pitching them, which is why I have 6 boxes of IR 1000 cartridges I'm willing to donate to anyone that needs them (that's besides the point.) Now, if you choose Animas, you will have to change the cartridge every day or every 1.5 days. If you change it every morning (or evening) you will be in a pattern that you will hopefully always remember, and with the extra insulin you can stray from it possibly 8-12 hours.

Therefore choosing Animas you can fill a cartridge with insulin and with a permanent marker put a I on it. Then when you use that cartridge 24 hours later, you put another I on it for II. Then the following day do it again so you have III, which means when you go for a complete infusion set change, you change your cartridge and start out with a new one. Simple enough right? A monkey could do it.

Now, if you choose the Cozmo or even the Minimed 715, then you have 300 units of insulin. At 125 units in a day, that means you will be changing the insulin cartridge at 2.5 days roughly. If you use more insulin, you will be changing at about 2 days.

That puts you in an odd cycle of how many supplies you need to order for a month (ordering the exact same amount of cartridges and infusion sets is easy ordering.) It also puts it hard on remembering to change the insulin cartridge and you could run out mid-day when you least expect it. You wouldn't have any routine set up for changing the cartridge and you could keep an infusion set in too long or you could forget a time to change the cartridge.

Do you understand what I'm saying? Mainly I look at having only 200 units as a convenience for you. And you wouldn't be wasting any insulin, say you only use 140 units in your 186 unit cartridge, you can just add 140 more units with the current 46 units in there and it won't hurt anything. The only key you would need to remember is to not throw the needle or little plunger handle away after filling the cartridge or it will make filling it again the next day a little tougher.

I agree that if you take 110 a day the animas won't last very long. I saw both cozmo and animas today and they are similarly sized.

i agree fg.....i believe it all depends on how much insulin you use. which is different from person to person and can very from time to time....so it still comes down to personal preference and what works best for you

Great news! Like Duck said, once you get the go ahead, you can choose any pump. More than likely, your TDD will go down once you start pumping. Keep us updated. I'm sure you'll be back looking for tips once you start...

Oh yes I'm not on the pump yet and already have about a million and one ?'s
so I have found a new family....lol

So if I understand you dont have to chance the whole infusion set if you run out of insulin you just need to put more in the pump...will that cause bubbles...I may have took that the wrong way

You can change reservoirs without changing infusion sets. It doesn't introduce bubbles by doing so. There are ways to reduce chances of bubbles with every new reservoir.

I do this all the time. I change my sets every 2 days and run out of insulin every 1 1/2 to 2 days. I use the same tubing for a week also so I don't waist that insulin every 2 days.

If I remeber correct when I was on that wonderful mix **** I was at 140 units a day. When I was on lantus I was on 120 units a day. And I am looking at my pump now and it looks as if I pump between 80 & 150 units a day.
