Okay, I thought I was so good over Easter. I was away on a camp from Friday to Monday, had no chocolate AT ALL (wow, i do have willpower!), may have had a couple of drinks too many one night (Okay, I could hardly stand and my friend had to half carry me back to the lodge), but I still don't understand how I got up on monday with a bgl of 7.4, then was 32.1 at lunchtime when all i had eaten was a slice of cape seed toast and an apple! I took 16 units on top of my normal 8, and an hour later was reading "HI", with large ketones... **** **** **** **** ****!!!!! FINAALLY managed to get down (well, to 22, then 16) but... HOW??????? Grrr, I've now developed croup, and generally feel crappy!! Does anybody else have constant probs like this? Unfortunately, it ain't rare 4 me

That's a very significant increase - if you injected 16u of bolus insulin and your bg still increased, then your liver must have been gushing out glucose into your blood.
As a thought, did you remember to have your basal insulin as normal? If you forgot that, then that would help explain why your BG kept rising.
Other than that, there is also the possibility that one of your drinks may have been spiked.

There is the possibility of what you drank could have affected it, if you drink with mixers be careful as I have known the word Diet before Coke or tonic to not be heard by a bartender or even they pick up the wrong stuff!!

Hmmm.. how frustrating :banghead:. I don't know if anyone here is going to be able to explain this situation.
My guess is that it's illness or infection. You mentioned that you are developing some kind of bug...that probably has increased your insulin needs and that's why your normal doses weren't doing the trick :frown:. How are you doing now? If your levels are still that high, I would definitely contact your MD :call:... especially if you have ketones.
As frustrating as it is, sometimes there's just no explanation for these things :dontknow:. All you can do in that case, is treat the high and monitor more closely.
Hope you are feeling better :)

did u check for ketones??????
i manage to get that drunk but it was off beer.and still managed to keep my levels between 4 and 8mmol.
what exactly were u drinking (just curious) if you are sick ya it will effect your sugars but i have only been sick once while diagnosed...that seems like a huge increase from 7-32...i would also be curious to know what caused that jump

Sorry, I should have meen more explicit... I was drinking on the SATURDAY night, was fine all day Sunday, then went high on Monday. I had all my normal insulin, did everything as per usual, then... BANG!!!
Also, psilocybin, I was drinking, well, lots...
3 vodka, soda water and fresh lime, 8 cowboy shots ( don't worry, I took a 6 u bolus), 2 tequila slammers and 2 tequila and sprite zero...
My bgls have come down, but I'm testing about 8 times a day coz I'm quite sick... croup, not sleeping, and my antibiotics make me vomit... but ketones are gone... THank the Lord!!!!
Thanks 4 ur help guys!!!

Sorry to hear that you have been having such a rough time. I hope you are able to get yourself back to normal soon. I don't have a lot of experience with inexplicable highs--my username should be 2low based on the number of troubles I have had with lows. You seem to be doing the right things to treat the high (testing for ketones, testing blood glucose frequently, blah, blah, blah). I wish I had suggestions for avoiding that high.
Best of luck in avoiding the next one.

thanks! Maybe we should take half of each others islet cells... Have normal bg readings 24/7!

You say this isn't unusual for you, however, infection (of any sort) is notorious for destabilising blood glucose levels. If you have had a chest infection then at least in this instance that is the likely culprit.
Hope you're feeling better.

Actually, I just got out of hospital... ended up with Asthma attacks due to the croup. The doctor in emergency refused to let me have any insulin coz I hadn't eaten, so my BGL went to 29... Apparently she thinks we only have insulin when we eat... if only...
So they kept me in for 3 days...

:( I'm sorry that sounds rough. It very well could be that your developing an illness caused the high numbers.
One other thought... what's the temperature this time of year where you are? I had a similar thing happen when I fried my insulin once. But it was really hot 100+ F (37+ C)
