Bummed a bit

Yesterday I saw a new endocrinologist, who I couldn't be more thrilled with. He filled out my medical necessity form for my new cozmo pump that day and faxed it over, so my pump is on the way.

I met with the educator yesterday as well. She had me put in a comfort set. I wore it for almost 24 hours. Almost. It was irritating the heck out of me. I kept bumping it on my seat belt or my pants waist. And it hurt everytime. Then it just started being a dull pain constantly, and I couldn't ignore it anymore. I yanked it. The cannula had blood in almost the whole thing, so I am thinking that may have been part of my problem? Or are sore sets just something to get used to? Educator assures me pumping will make it worth any pain.

My family is the other problem. They are not thrilled about this. My mom is especially bad, telling me, "I don't care about your glucose, or whatever!" Yesterday she was asking me questions about my pump, and I thought she was getting better, but no go. Today she was telling me how I should stop obsessing over my "new meter." She doesn't get it at all. I'm getting an expensive device that I imagine will change my life, and she is acting like it's amoxicillan.

Anyways, I'm just a little bummed, cause I was so excited yesterday, and no one around me cares.

We are all around you and we all care. Blood is something you have on very rare occasions. And without having the actual pump connected to it pumping something in, blood will more likely try to come out right now. But it does happen, not that often though.

Sorry to hear about the mom. But you are doing the right thing. Hopefully she will jump on board soon, but it's a shame that she doesn't care enough for your health now. Good luck with her, but remember, we all care.

Im sorry about your moms attitude/mentality. COuld it be that she is worried?

I have family members that act this way too, very annoying for me. Keep your chin up because we are ALL here for you. This is for your healthy future and its your time, ALL ABOIUT YOU!!!

You should avoid your waist area, and personally those "comfort" sets aren't all that great (I call 'em dis-comforts).

You might want to give the Insets a try; they are easier to put in w/ an automatic inserter rather than manual.

The blood thing does happen, but not often and you should find that you won't feel your sets at all so don't expect "pain" to be worth it. If a set is bothering you it needs to be changed, not suffered with.

Funnygrl, if you have the insertion set inserted with nothing running into it, you will run the greater risk of it allowing fluids to seep out. Does that make sense? It also gets more irritated, from what I have read here from others who did it the way you are doing it.

Parents...WHO NEEDS THEM? J/K. Read my story about my mom when I had the worst hypo of my life. Here's a woman who otherwise cared for me and took care of me most of my life treating me like I was just the biggest irritant in the world when I couldn't fend for myself. For whatever reason, every single one of us has that one person in our lives who just doesn't "get it" with our disease...and it seems that "mom" is many times that person. Maybe this is a defense mechanism against the reality that their perfect kid, the one they went through all the trouble protecting and teaching to be perfect, is not perfect. <--That's my theory with my mother, and eventually she came around some.

Yeah, the fluid thing makes sense. Luckily, my next set will be with saline next week.

Just another thought -- if you're thin, you might want to try the new shorter angled sets. My 14-year-old uses them and really finds them completely comfortable. Funnily enough, he also prefers inserting them to the straight-in set with the automatic inserter ("That thing scares the **** out of me") -- which is opposite to what he expected.

Only thing he doesn't like about them is they leave a scabby mark where the insertion point was that lasts a lot longer than the little Quickset bump.

My first set (with saline) was like that too. It hurt.

I was a bit worried that they would all be like that, but the next set (when I went live) didn't hurt at all.

Some spots are just more sensitive than others.

I've been on the pump for 2 weeks now (woo, hoo!) and I had one site that stung. Turns out I had blood in the canula. Hasn't happened again and I can't feel the set at all. It's the greatest!

Funny, I'm right there with you. My non supporter of pump therapy isn't my mom but my hubby. He's actually starting to come around and ask questions but :dontknow:. Hang in there. The pumpers on here are great. I know of one who will help you in any way he can. All you have to do is ask him (you know who I mean, too :wink:).

I'm just finishing a trial on the Cozmo (4 weeks) and I didn't have any problem with the sites, but I expect that some sites are better than others. I used the Insets and they worked great for me. I also used the Ultraflex (until the recall) with no problem. I avoided the beltline.

My guess is that you just got unlucky with your first insertion and those problems won't happen very often.

It's a downer that your mom doesn't get it and she is not supportive. It sounds a little as if she is in denial concerning your diabetes. Maybe deep down she blames herself for "giving you" or "causing" the disease. Who knows? Either you have to accept her attitude and move on or get her into counseling (with you) to work through the issues.

My mom is diabetic but she takes pillls and is still not used to me taking the shots....so when I mentioned the pump she said .." your sugar cant be that bad to have to get on that thing"...lol

The Comfort set is similar to the Silhouette, which I only managed to keep in for 3 hours. I can't wear any angled sets. Ask for more sample sets! Glad you are getting a pump. If your mom isn't interested, ignore her--you are doing the right thing for yourself.

my mom is a diabetic and she only takes the pills. she still hasnt come to terms with me being on the shots. and now that I am trying for the pump she says to me " your sugar can't be bad enough to go on that thing" lol

Like the others, I'd say try & get different sets or samples. This way, you can use something else to see if it works better. Ironically, it seems that every pump company sends those goofy "Silhouette" or "Comfort" sets, when nobody really seems to like them much. LOL - Heather's right in that they are more like "Dis-comfort" sets! :D

On your mom, I'm sorry she's not being more supportive, but as others have said, we're here & we care. If you have any questions or need to chat, feel free to post or PM any one of us, and we'll do what we can to assist. Those of us who have Cozmores can help with feature or pump questions you might have, and everyone can help in other areas (i.e. sets & the like). Please don't lose hope! Feel free to PM me anytime! Silhouttes... Bah! :thumpdown... those were awful :frown:. I found they hurt to insert and I wasn't always sure that I was getting the best delivery. I agree with the others- try other things out. Try different types of sets and try different places. I'm sure you will find something that works for you :smile:.

As for family issues... I can speak all too well on this too. I also feel that they just don't get it :s:. And as I've tried grilling it into them... it doesn't work. I've given up for the most part. What irritates me even more is that I feel like they downplay everything I go through. They'll say "I know this person with Diabetes...AND he/she handles it so well..." or "you have it so much better than some people with other illnesses". All that might be fine and true, but that doesn't make my experience any easier. Plus, how can they really know how someone else is managing their disease...they are really only outsiders looking in. So it can be quite frustrating :argh:. But saying that, I know they still care and I'm sure you Mom does too. I guess people don't always show it as we would like them too.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck with your pump and try to hang in there :)

I have loved every minute of my pump and wish I knew about them sooner.

I dont mind the infusion sets that came with my cozmore pump.

As for your family not being into giving you support, that really sucks.

My family loves my pump and wants my mom to get one but insurance says she doesn't need one LOL Insurance is dumb b/c they also say she doesnt need insulin.

My friend's daughter has a cozmo and uses the CLEO. She loves it. Ask your cozmo rep if you can try it. By the way, you will love pumping. I just started and it has changed my life. I can't believe how stable my blood sugars are. Don't worry; it will become second nature in no time and you will be thrilled with it!!!

My educator didn't have any samples of cleo, and I can't get them because they are ony availible direct from cozmo at the moment, and I have to go through a third party vendor to get mine, because of insurance. Darn it! I have heard the cleos are great many times.

That will be something to look forward to! I have a Minimed 715 so I'm using their infusion set (drawing a blank on the name) and I like it...although the cleo is much quicker to insert from what my friend says.

Good luck with it. I'm sure you will love the pump. It's life changing!!!
