Hi all -

I'm doing my afternoon basal test next week. What did you all eat for breakfast that would hold you over until dinner or did you just starve? :help:

Skipping breakfast was ok, but lunch is a different story. I'm not looking forward to it!!!

BTW, I'm on three different basal rates so far and two carb ratios. I think my am #'s are straightened out. I can't believe how easy it is to control my blood sugars with the pump. It's just amazing!

Just be sure to eat early enough so that both the food and the bolus insulin will be out of your system by the time your basal testing period starts. Also eat a breakfast for which you know the exact amount to bolus so that you start the basal period at a reasonable BG level (between 100 and 150, say). You don't want to have to correct with either insulin or food if possible because you want to see how your BG drifts from the beginning of the basal testing period to the end without any interference from food or bolus insulin.

You don't want to have to correct with either insulin or food if possible I agree, except that if you have to correct, I'd consider the test over, done failed. You've introduced too many variables.

I'm doing my first afternoon test today. I've had such an issue with late afternoon lows that we had to get those resolved before attempting a fasting test. I didn't eat breakfast (never do, but I should start.. might make my DP a little less strong) and of course skipped lunch. It was a little tough around lunchtime, when my body was used to getting food, but now its a little easier. So far so good! Now we're going in to the late afternoon hours when I've had the most problems, though.

Good luck with your test next week, make sure to study ! ;)

Glad to hear things are moving along quickly. The pump really is a big step up from MDI, at least for me it was. With regards to skipping lunch, try bringing a snack with you so when the testing is done, you have something you can eat. You can also drink alot of water to fill your stomach as that might fight off any hunger pains.

You're not kidding! It's the best!!!
I'm going to try my pm test today. I had toast, two eggs and coffee this am. That breakfast has a very predictable effect on my bgs so I think I'll be in range.

Wish me luck so I don't have to do it again.

Hmmm, :hmmmm:... I'd be very surprised if they had you do these basal tests only once, b/c you really cannot draw conclusions based on one test. For me... I had to repeat my basal tests a few times. I still have to my night and daytime test one more time each :s:

That's good to know. My test went well...I don't think any adjustments will be made to the pm basals based on the results of that test. I really didn't get hungry until about 2:30 and not eating didn't bother me too much. I guess all of those years of NPH gave me anxiety about eating lunch too late!

AM1977, I agree with you that 1 test does not a valid conclusion make. There are too many variables to make an assumption based on one test result.
