Hello All,

I am new here and hoping to find people to talk to that can relate to my situation.

My son was diagnosed a few weeks ago and it feels like our lives have been turned upside down. My son's father is diabetic but we don't live together so a lot of the time I'm dealing with it on my own. I have had limited experience up to now, so I am having a lot of trouble adjusting. I am also so scared that I am going to do something wrong.

I would just like to talk to other people going through a similar situation. Maybe you have some tips that could help.

Thanks

Welcome :hello:

I can't imagine how difficult it must be to hear that your child is dealing with this illness. That must be extremely hard for you as a parent :frown:. However, saying that, please do not feel like you are alone. There are many other parents out there in the same situation who know and understand where you are right now. We have some really wonderful parents here who could offer you a lot of support and advice... We're here to help if we can.

So please do visit us- we'll be looking forward to getting to know you :ciao:

WELCOME...
Glad u found us.
I can imagine how overwhelmed you must feel. We r all here for you. One thing that can keep you at peace, if possible, is to check his BS as much as u can. Tell us more about your son, kinds of insulin, how his BS has been, high- low? age?

We r here to help out as much as we can!

He is 2 and a half. He is on NovoRapid and NPH. His BS has been 2.3 to 25. It seems like its all over the map. The problem is that he is a very picky eater and sometimes doesn't want to eat at all so I end up giving him juice and candy when he goes low which is often. I wanted to avoid that. Is it possible? :)

Welcome, SammyP! Sorry to hear about your little guy. I hope you find the information and support here to help you both through the difficult adjustment period.

As others have said, there are quite a few parents here who will have plenty of advice to offer. One recommendation for kids is to have them eat and then give them the insulin so that they aren't eating to match the insulin--that will help eliminate a large number of conflicts over food.

I hope you have a good health care team. Are you being treated through Sick Kids in Toronto? I hope you are getting the best in care. Good luck.

This is normal for the begining. There has to be some foods he really likes, cookies? certain types of juice?

Is there any way you can switch him to another insulin, like Lantus?

Welcome to the forum, although it saddens me when I hear of young ones being dx'd with this disease. I am sure many of the other parents here on the board will answer any questions you may have.
