I am currently on a 1 unit per 20 carbs ratio. I havent had any lows in a long time (for about a month) so i am thinking about switching to 1 unit per 15 carbs. Any comments?

You haven't had any lows, but are you having highs?

Well, i dont check at lunch, becuase i am at school and it is hard for me to do so. I can sometimes feel i am high, feel kind of like a i have a slight fever(may just be mental) during the day after lunch. Its high at explainable times, like at the end of the day, right when im giving myself my lantus. but yes, i have been noticing notable highs when i check.

There's really no excuse to not check. If you feel like you might have a fever, are you getting sweaty? This can be one of the signs of a hypo. If you change your ratio, it may make things worse. You really should find a way to check your bg at school. It would be a real shame to start doing damage to your body while still so young.

What kind of a BG meter are you using? There are some pretty small meters available that you can just slip in your pocket along with a few test strips and a small lancet device.

We can recommend a small meter (which we will tell you how to get for free) if you let us know what kind of test strips you use.

I read about this guy who checks his BG while he's hiking. He doesn't stop walking when he does the test. Another guy tests his BG while he's jogging. If they can manage to test their BG while hiking and jogging, you should be able to test yours walking between classes. It only takes a minute.

First of all you should NEVER change your ratios without testing, do this at home, in a controled environment with small quantities. Make sure you know exactly what you ate and I would test AT LEAST every hour to make sure my new ratio is working. You are recently dx'ed like me so you are probably still in your honeymoon period, I've noticed that when I under inject sometimes my number stay low because my pancreas still have a bit of life and it keeps the BG normal, however I think it's not a good idea to keep doing it because this will put needless strain on your pancreas and probably just end your honeymoon sooner. Try to get your ratio correct but again, in a very controlled environment, not guessing without testing in school.

I also can not agree more with the advice you already got, never skip testing even in school. Especially if you don't feel well. No matter how annoying it is to test I'm sure it will be 100 times worse getting a serious hypo and waking up in a hospital. If the problem is time, test while walking to your next class or during class, if the problem is doing it in public go to the restrooms, I'm sure you can spare the 1 minute it takes to test. Whatever works for you just make sure you do it. The last thing you want is having major complications few years down the road and realize how simple it could've been to just test 2-3 times a day in school.

I hope this helps.

Corwin.
