View Full Version : Would you correct a 7.5 mmol/L?

I won't be having dinner for another 3 hours - would you correct now? I'm thinking I should bolus 1u Novorapid as this usually lowers me about 3 mmol/L.
Or, as it's only slightly high would you wait & take a comp. bolus when shooting up to cover dinner?
I think I should take the 1u now. Do you?
Thanks :)

Personally, no, unless I knew it was rising sharply. I don't often test following meals, unless I am feeling off. If I am below 4 mmol or above 10 mmol, I will correct.

I would probably exercise if it was bugging me, mostly because my Novopen doesn't seem to do 1 unit very well....

try testing in half and hour or an hour, if you are rising fast then yes if you are stabilising at 7.5 then no........

I was hasty & took 1u an hour ago! Just tested & it's 6.8 - I'll keep an eye on it.

I wouldn't take insulin for a 7.5. I usually only take some if it's higher then 10, and it's closer to a meal time. Your sugars should be around 10 about an hour after you eat, and then slowly declining, so I sorta base my decisions on that thinking.........

Everyone's case is different, but I would rather live with 7.5 than risk hitting 3.0 because I overtreated. Many times, the bg comes down on it's own depending on the last meal, your activity level, etc.

Typically, I wouldn't mess with anything under 8.3/150 at the two hour mark.
If it has been more than two hours since I've had anything to eat and I were still above 8/144 then I would bolus to bring it down
except,
if I were about to begin some serious exercise, then I wouldn't worry about it 'cause I know that I'd have an extra cushion during the exercise session.

Your sugars should be around 10 about an hour after you eat,
No, this is a complete misunderstanding. Your BG level should be as near normal, 4.5/85, at all times, as possible. This happens to be impossibly for almost all diabetics so there are guidelines for what you should aim for.
When the only test available was glucose urine strips, you tested your urine to see if it had glucose in it. If it did Bad, if not Good. This test is equal to testing if BG is under 10/180. That's because 10/180 is the point that the kidney begins to excrete glucose and was the only thing you could test at home.
Recent research strongly suggests that BG levels should kept at 8/140 or below, even 2 hours after meals, if damage to the body is to be avoided.
There is certainly no rule that BG should be kept above normal, except as a preventive against hypoglycemia. If you could keep your BG right at normal without the risk of hypos, why wouldn't you?

On the insulin im on, No.
In your situation i wouldnt. But its up to you, your experience, your insulin, etc. Do what you think is best. :)

I would not correct this at a 2 hour mark. At a 3 hour mark possibly, but that's because I'm on a pump. If I wasn't on a pump, I'd let it ride till the next insulin dose and correct then.

Yes, I would take half a unit.

No, this is a complete misunderstanding. Whether you're diabetic or not, your BG will NEVER be at that region at all times. You want to reach this region and be at it for as long as possible but you can permit your BG to rise briefly after eating. 10 is too high, certainly, but 7-8 is perfectly fine PROVIDED it isn't for much longer than an hour.
Seriously, go and test a non-diabetic 30mins-1hour after they've eated. They will NOT have a a BG at 4.5. It will be higher than that.

Indeed, I tested my girlfriend and her dad 30 mins after eating and they both had BG's over 9mmol/l. I was about 10.5 with the same meal + taking insulin. That's why I don't stress too much about being that high after eating.

Well, what i find is if I'm at 10 about an hour after I eat (which is what my doctor told me should be at), I will be back down to 4 or 5 at the next meal time because of my Humilin N long acting that's working during the day.
If I was to take a couple of units of Humalog, I would be in a hypo within an hour or so.
And even if I'm causing "damage" because my blood is at 10 and not at 7 an hour after I eat, I would much rather keep my stress low by not micromanaging my self to the point where I'm injecting a single unit of insulin.
That may be wrong to say, but I truly belive that some people cause themselves more problems by frettting over the tiniest little details then just enjoying things and not worrying. After all, stress mucks up your levels too, so a person could concievably be creating their own problem!
That's my opinon anyway..... don't quote me on it! ;)

Thanks everyone. It was over 3 hours since I had last eaten & I did not do any exercise. The 1u I bolused brought me down & steadied my bs around 4.5 to 5.5 until my next meal.
