Someone please help

last week friday, i passed out due to a severe hypo. woke up in the ER with a drip in my arm, as soon as i came around, i felt as though my right arm where the drip was insereted was about to explode. it's been sore and tender ever since, the vein where the drip was inserted has become painful, red and hard. i've been doing my normal weightlifting etc, but now it's become really bad. what is it and what should i do?

I would contact the ER again and ask them. I had this happen about 10 years ago but unfortunately I was only 14 at the time and don't remember what they did. But I was in the ER and had an IV in and while the IV was in it hurt like heck. So they had to take it out an reinsert it at that time in my other arm but the first spot still swelled up alot. I'm not sure what they ever did.

I would contact the ER and let them know. I had 5 MRIs done early this month and had a lot of GAD injected, which is a lot like IVs. It was bruised for quite some time and VERY itchy.

ok, got to the bottom of this at last, might be of use for future reference. it's actually phlybitis due to an over aggressive drip setting. another wonder of the highly competent SA medical staff :thumpdown

They attempted an IV six times before they were successful when I was delivering my first. They put ice packs on the unsuccessful attempts :help:
and they seemed to help.

I would definitely call your doctor :call:...for there to be that much pain this long after having it removed, doesn't seem quite right :thumpdown.

You have a blood clot? If so, you need to be careful.

Well I'd say better off.

They couldn't treat my high BG levels when I was diagnosed, I had to travel to Italy to be put on the correct insulin type and treatment regimes.

When I had stomach problems, I was almost killed by an SA doc, and again I had to travel to Italy to get proper treatment. I don't really believe they've done anything for me except cause me complications.

Phleb/o- vein (I think :hmmmm:). and -itis- means inflammation of.

Ick! Sorry you're having such a rough time of it, but as for the phlybitis, it can happen at any hospital. When i was a kid I had that happen to me (I didn't post earlier cause I was a kid and didn't know what it was, or how they fixed it) and this was at one of the best hospitals in New York. That is to say one of the best hospitals in well... anywhere. Sometimes I think medicine is more luck than anything else.

HI, speaking as an ER nurse, I assume they gave you either an amp of d50 or D5LR or D5ns wide open. I don't know if an aggressive drip would have caused your phlebitis, I run alot of drips wide open and haven't had anyone return with a problem. My bet would be on their IV equipment. Anyhow I do hope you are feeling better. Heat packs work well and Nsaids for pain. Goodluck=) claire

Sorry to hear about your bad experiences with SA doctors. We also live in sunny SA, but fortunately my experience is the exact opposite. My son, aged 6, has been diagnosed with T1 4 months ago and I can only say we have had only the best experience - both in the hospital where he had to stay for 10 days because of the dramatic onset - ketones etc. etc. and continuing for the past 4 months. We live in Pretoria though, seems medical care here is way better than in Johannesburg! No need to have travelled all the way to Italy!
