Novo Pen for Lantus

I really like novo pen, the novo nordisc 3 I think is the name while I find the Lantus pen bulky and uncomfortable to use. I just got the new disposable pens for novo, so I'm thinking of using the old novo pen for my lantus shots. Considering I'm attentive enough not to inject the wrong insulin, can anyone think of a reason not to do this?

I don't think that the Lantus cartridge is compatiable with any of the Novo pens.

Could be vey wrong, but I believe they were made NOT to be compatible.

Have you tried the disposable Lantus pens? I find them fine to use.

I've heard there is a pen brand "Owen Mumsford" which fits the Lantus cartridge

no it is not...i didnt even think lantus came in a cartridge till i just saw it was only available in the united states... not in canada,, guess that answers my question

Are you talking about filling an old novo (empty) cartridge with lantus and using it?

Strange I could swear the cartridges of the Lantus and Novo are the same. I remember the nurse telling me to be carefull not to switch the 2 when I was dx'ed. I guess I'll skip the medical experiments and just get the disposable Lantus cartridges when I'm done with my current batch. Too bad I have about 6 months supply.

Who makes a disposable Lantus pen? I've tried using pens for Novolog (the Novolog Flexpen) and I like the fact that the insulin is part of the pen instead of a seperate cartridge. Now I want to find a Lantus pen that is the same way.

Yup Owen Mumford makes pens suitable for use with Lantus, and also with Humalog. The Autopen 24 is for use with Lantus Cartridges. I think Mumford is the other insulin companies' answer to the Novopen.

The Autopen 24 is what I use. Aventis also make the disposable OptiSet but the pens are very poor and somewhat erratic with doses. If your Lantus carts are anything like mine, then they won't fit the Novopen. With the Novo, you screw the needle onto the cartridge, so the cart has a threaded plastic top and the pen cartholder is open. With Lantus you screw the needle to the actual pen itself and so Lantus carts don't have the necessary threading.

If you REALLY like your Novopen then you might want to change from Lantus to Levemir. Levemir works very similiarly to Lantus but it's made by Novo and is compatable with the Novopen. However in some people for some reason it simply doesn't seem to work.

The Autopen is a reasonable pen - very thin, but also rather plasticy and just doesn't feel 100% reliable.

I would not recommend doing this b/c Lantus has an acidic PH and specifically recommends not to mix or dilute it with ANYTHING. I wouldn't want to risk any small amount of your novo insulin mixing with Lantus that would cause it to form microprecipitates and then behave erradically in your body.

I've heard that shortly there will be a disposable pen for Lantus in the US that is much better than the Opticlick. Who knows if it's true....
