Instead on my normal low carb breakfast that I've been making a habit of for years, I broke out the Riasen Brand this morning. Those little mini-boxes are so small that I actually had 2 of them. With the milk it totalled 80 carbs, 350 calories! I did take my Symlin. This will truely be a test for me...

With a 285 bg 2 hours after eating, I wasn't too pleased. I did combo bolus my insluin over 2 hours, I'll try again tomorrow taking all the insulin up front.

Cyorg, this is what I did. Normally for a bowl of cereal I take 12 units of insulin. With the Symlin I would take 10 units(symlin) and then bolus about 2 units of insulin and then square wave the rest of the 4 for 3 hours. It took me a few tries to figure it all out. The Symlin was hitting me fast after taking it so there was no way I could take it 15 minutes before eating.

Thanks for the tip.... I think I will forego the combo bolus tomorrow since I do have the liver dump and higher insulin resistance to deal with in the morning. I will monitor closely to ensure I don't go hypo. Time for experimentation!

You know, I get the same thing whenever I eat breakfast cereals. My favorite is those Muffin Tops by malt o meal. But, no matter how I do my bolus, square or dual or all up front, I end up with a post prandial in the 200's. I'm trying to find other things to eat for breakfast, but it is hard because if it is not high carb, it is high fat, or so it seems.

As this is now a Symlin experiment, I'll continue this post in the Symlin thread tomorrow morning after my morning bowl of Raisen Bran.

I have problems with the junk food cereals - Lucky Charms, Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch etc. I do great with really high fiber cereal like All Bran or some of the Kashi and Back To Nature cereals. Even Cheerios kills me at two hours. Luckily I really like the high fiber stuff but I do have an unopened box of PB Cap'n Crunch calling my name and I won't be able to ignore it forever.
Usually I have some of the high fiber cereal with skim milk, fresh fruit & Egg Beaters. Or, I'll have the cereal with fat free yogurt instead of milk. I also like whipped low fat cottage cheese with ground flax seeds and fresh fruit. I have Egg Beaters with the yogurt or cottage cheese as well for extra protein.
I love Thomas' Wholegrain Light English Muffins. They have 8g of fiber, and I spread a wedhe of Laughing Cow Light cheese on one, add some cooked Egg Beaters and a slice of ham, veggie sausage patty or bacon to make my own breakfast sandwich. They're also great with some peanut butter or fat free/low fat cream cheese & jam.

Another variable that you might want to throw into the mix is to try soy milk instead of cow's milk. The unsweetened kind that I like has 6 grams of carbs per 8 oz. serving (4 of them from fiber, so some might even say it just has 2 grams of carbs), as opposed to 13 grams in cow's milk. It made a big difference in my ability to have a small bowl of Cheerios in the morning without sending my glucose levels through the roof.

I'm actually trying to eat more carbs while watching the calories. I've been restricting carbs for a long time and now that I'm on the pump and I've got Symlin, I want to try and "kick the habit". I picked up a book called Good Carbs, Bad Carbs. I guess it's time to start reading it.

Point taken. Going straight to 80 carbs from a low carb diet might be a little tough, though, especially for breakfast (at least I imagine it would be for me, because that seems to be when I'm most insulin resistant). If you can get to the point where you can eat Post Cranberry Almond Crunch, which was my favorite (except for those, um, 15 or 20 years when I didn't eat breakfast), let me know. Even just hearing what it's like will be fun for me, even if I don't think I can handle the real stuff again quite yet. I'm rooting for you!
For me, even very high-fiber bread seems to kick my bg up pretty quick. The best I have found for me is a compromise Orowheat Best Winter Wheat bread tastes good and seems to be be easiest on the blood sugar, but not by much.
I don't eat white stuff if I can help it: potatoes, rice, bread. I make pizza out of whole wheat Boboli bread. Our family favorite is BBQ chicken pizza using chicken leftovers, Carb-Options BBQ sauce, olive oil and chopped green onions and cilantro. My husband loads his half with grated mozzarella, but I like goat cheese on mine. It still takes a square wave bolus, but doesn't affect me quite as much as regular pizza dough.
One of those suggestions in Bernstein's book that I have found really helpful is his idea to use crispbread because of the lower glycemic value. I use a variety of the WASA brands (9-14 g carb per slice) for breakfast for something crunchy. I use Peter Pan peanut butter (lowest carb I've found--watch out for the added sugar kinds of other brands) and some Smucker's Sugar Free Preserves. One or two of these suits me just fine, a small, quick, portable breakfast that goes well with coffee. It is so slowly metabolized that I must do a combination bolus with 60% up front over an hour or two.
I'm watching the Symlin discussion with great interest.

wow, i eat a bowl of cereal in the morning i only take 3 units of novalog to cover it. But it might be because i take lantus at night and my first period class is weightlifting.

I eat 62 grams of Special K with Red Berries (yes, I weigh it) in one cup of 1% milk every morning--about 65 grams of carbs total. I take 10 units of Symlin and 13 units of novolog and my BG never breaks 140 and ends up near 100 by lunch time. It works so well that I'm almost afraid to try anything else.

Don't forget that those raisins (do they still put sugar on 'em?) have loads of carbs. Each one of 'em started off as a grape.
