View Full Version : Question about hypos
I was having dinner last night with my parents in law and my father in law mentioned that a friend of his had a really bad low a while back- his friend is type 2 and is apparently only on oral meds.
At the risk of sounding ignorant, is it possible to have a bad low without injecting insulin? Just curious.
Thanks

Hmmm, I think some Type 2 meds can cause lows.... I'm not certain on this, obviously, but I think I might have read that.

The sulfonylureas "push" the pancreas to secret extra insulin and therefore acts as if it were a small shot of insulin. Some Type 2 can also experience mild lows from exercise or missing meals because the glucose metabolism is is so messed up.

I was warned that with the intake of metformin (since it supresses what the liver puts out) it's possible to have lows. I've never had them on just metformin though but I was warned.

1000 mg of metformin daily and I have been having lows quite a bit lately.

I've had lows on gliclazide and glibenclamide-both sulfonylureas, not serious ones and easily corrected. (but I'm not a type 2)

I'm type 2 and on 850 mg. Metformin 2 x a day. My lowest has been 62. Anything below 90 and I start shaking.

I find it depends what condition you're in and what you are doing.
My record low was 3 (54) when I was working physically. Now, if I am planning to do hard work or execercise, I don't take the Gliclazide and I sip (repeat, sip) an energy drink throughout the period that I'm working.
I was warned that combination of Metformin with the beta blockers I take, can in some people cause hypos - that didn't happen for me.
