Unhappy Any one from Indiana

I am new and have just brrn diagnosised with having diabeties, however, my doctor did not inform me if I had type 1 or 2. Most days my sugar level is below 120 and when I wake up in the mornings, my sugar level indicates 85 or lower.

On the days it is 125 or greater I take my insulin shot of Lantus. Can anyone out there let me know what the normal sugar level is? I have asked my doctor and he does not give me a straight answer.

Also, no one in my family has ever had diabeties.

Hi Love!!! 120! Wow what I do for 120??? I live in southern Indiana around Bloomington. 120 is not that high and to take insulin?? Boy I don't know about that. Get a new doctor if he does not anser your questions! And he should have told you 1 or 2! He should also set you up with someone that can tell you how and what to eat, dietician maybe...

Hello Lovehm2, Welcome to DF! Sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis! You have found a wonderful forum. I agree ask your doc for some answers regarding your type etc. As far as normal levels for bg's, as far as I know I think the normal level range is 80 to 120 or 4.4 to 6.6 for those who use the other conversion table *I think I did my math right but correct me if I'm off lol*. I'm in Ohio btw just a few hours from the Indiana border.

Hi, Lovehm2

The general range for normal depends on the lab but is usually 80 - 120 mg/dl. You will often hear about A1C these days and that value should be under 6.6. If your fasting sugar is 120 or under and you didn't have an A1C done, I would ask your doctor seriously about what Type you have been diagnosed (not likely Type 1 as this is juvenile diabetes normally). I would also ask for a 2nd opinion. If you are normal, taking insulin shouldn't mess you up but there is no reason to take it if you are normal. Plus, there is the expense. Does he have you testing and keeping a log? Why didn't he try oral medications first to control your glucose level? This sounds very strange to me!

Andy

Oh, living in the Houston TX area now but grew up in southern Indiana in New Albany! My relatives are all in Indianapolis and even have a couple of cousins who are Drs there.
