Angry This can't be right, 12.7 A1c

My Endos nurse just called. My A1c is 12.7!!!

I had the blood work done two weeks ago, we thought it MUST have been wrong and I went back to Quest for another last week. It's exactly the same My A1c 3 months ago was not great at 7.8, but I can't see how it could have jumped to 12.7!

My numbers have been okay, I did expect it to be higher than last quarter since I got into some depression and slacked off. But I was expecting low to mid 8s not 12.7. Nothing indicates how this could possibly be.

Can other meds affect the A1c? I take medication for anxiety, pain (i also have a marfan-like syndrome), b12, efa's, and get allergy shots. The only thing that has changed are my pain meds. Could they be skewing the results? This is driving me insane.

I am so sorry about your results, but if you had some depression and let it go for a little while that could be what is showing up, or it could be med's, someone on here might know more about that, but the best thing you can do for yourself is test test test....and see where those numbers are at all the time so you can work on getting that a1c back down......

Good luck to you

Cheryl

Cheryl always puts it the right way... I can only nod in solemn agreement. B-12 can affect your kidneys, though I have no proof that it affects your A1C. I hope you find the answers you're searching for.

I guess the ultimate question is how often are you checking and when do you check? That will help to tell if a 12.7 can be close to correct or not.

Whether it's right or wrong, treat it as right and search for your high areas: sleep time, mornings, and evenings are my 1st choices. Get into a 7 test a day routine and profile your basals.

Unhappy

hi everyone, thanks for the replies so far. i normally check 8-10 times a day. in febuary, when i was very depressed i checked 2-3 times a day and my numbers did run high in the 250-300 range frequently because i was doing an awful job and counting carbs and such (it would have really helped to have one of the newer pumps then for sure). i was depressed very badly for about 3.5 weeks.

thing is my control was extremely tight in december and january, and the begining again in march. i don't know if one bad month can account for such an large increase, i havent had an a1c that high since i was a slacking teen who didnt think i had anything to worry about. my docs nurse insists the one month can drive it up that high and was pretty cruel in her "speech" with me. not that it's an excuse but in late jan i found out i have a mutation for the genetic syndrome i have and it means i wont live past 45 if i am very lucky, dying from sudden aterial rupture, and most dont live past 30. i slid into an extremely bad depression after than. even though i had had genetic couseling it's hard to hear when your only 25.

when i did test during that period as i said above my numbers were high, i am sure the might have been higher even when i wasn't testing. but it was 3.5 weeks out of 3 months?

Is it possible you're anemic? I read a study that anemia can cause falsly elevated a1cs.

A1c is weighted for the last 30 days, and in my opinion, the last day carries more weight than T+90 days did. SO. If the last week before your A1c is bad, you can skew results. And vice versa.

No sense in beating yourself up. Commit to fixing it and soldier on. We all have these things happen to us, we'd be inhuman if we were perfect.

Greengirl, I'm sorry to hear about your A1C. I sure hope that things will work out & get better for you. As Duck said, try not to beat yourself up. I know it's easy to get frustrated or discouraged at times, but if you try your best & know the areas that need improvement, you're going in the right direction. Welcome aboard to the forums, and (((((Hugs))))) to you!

Well, IMO, if you take 2 great months and mix it up with almost a full month of crappy control, can really really get ugly

If you had lets say 3 days of a flu and your numbers were in the 300's, but then after the flu was gone, you went right back to where they should be, your a1c might only go up a few points. from like 7.5 to 8.3 (example)

lets say your average for

December was 120
January was 115
February was 350
added it up equals 585
divide that by 3 and that gives you 195 which is an a1c of 8.5 or around that.

so my thinking is, while you wasnt testing your numbers were ALOT higher than you expected, plus the depression will make a high numbers go even higher.

so your average level for those 3 months combined was around 337, so my guess is that for those 3.5 weeks your sugars were probably in the 400's to 500's, since you had really really tight control for the previous two months

but dont let that bring you down, get back in there, hit it head on, and the next time be back down below 7.0 lol so good luck

There is another test available if you suspect the A1c is off. It's called fructosamine, and it measures the last 2-3 weeks.
Fructosamine: The Test

I've heard of conditions affecting the hemoglobin that could result in an A1c being off, but I got the impression they were very rare. Sorry I can't remember any other details.

Take another test. It can't do any harm and might put your mind at rest. Meanwhile, try not to let depression creep back, and visit here often - we won't judge you by your a1c

Thanks everyone, you guys are GREAT I am so glad I found DF. I tend to fall off track quite a bit in the past year and I think finding DF has really motivated me to do the best i can in keep my D under control.

Sweetcheeks, I'm sure you are right. I think I just didn't want to believe I let things get that out of hand.

Im also going to ask about the fructosamine test, I have to go to my endos today to drop off something.
