getting hooked up to CGMS AGAIN....

Oh what a choice. In the recent years (2 ) I have had an A1C that hovers around 7....well with much attempts to bring it down and keep all in check I just couldn't. I even did weight watchers for a year and lost 25 pounds etc....My doctor changed my ace inhibitiors a few times as well. This last time he changed them he wanted me in a month later to check labs. Well did that and ALL looked GREAT except ....you guessed it GLUCOSE....So after reading his report it took all of about 5 mins for me to call and ask to be put on a CGMS. I have done this 3 times before and hated the dual device, not getting it wet etc....but hey this is my life and I hate not having control over everything that I can...so I am hooking up on May 7 and the dietician told me I can wear it up to 7 days.....OH My GOSH....anyway I told her I would wear it Monday through Friday and bring it back in. My weekends are too packed with activities (Special Olympics, Diabetic walk, and a variety of other once a year events...) that I didn't want to bother with it then. Also, I am beginning to think that insulin resistance is slowly creeping up on me...it has only been 30 years of taking insulin so it could be an issue and the symlin too. I just need the info I guess! Anyone else have insulin resistance? or everything in sync but then you can't get your A1C to go lower no matter waht you have tried?

Dear Belinda,
Best of luck with the extra hook-up. Hopefully it will be helpful in sorting out your A1cs.

I started a MM 722 pump last week and am starting with their CGMS next week. For me, the thought of doing my 30mile bike rides knowing my numbers makes the extra device an easy choice.

Belinda,

Like you, I have also been injecting insulin for 30 years. I think insulin resistance creeps up on all of us. It is part of the aging process. And the more carb you eat, the worse it gets. My weight has always been normal. But I became aware over time of an increasingly powerful DP effect and an increasing bolus insulin:carb ratio. My BG became more volatile. And attempts to at improving the insulin regimen/control were fruitless. I also did the CGMS thing a couple of times. I hated wearing the thing. But it showed decisively that I was not having a Somogyi Effect rebound in the mornings.

I have dealt with this problem by reducing carbs, especially for breakfast, and getting a lot more exercise. The exercise improves insulin sensitivity. And cutting back on carbs reduces the size of the job that insulin has to do. The combined effect has definitely helped stabilise BG levels. It enabled me to get the HBA1c down to 6.5%. And I am now working on getting it down to 6%.

Cheers,

Mark
