| | Aviva problems So for a few weeks now I have been using the Aviva. Unfortunately, the numbers it has been giving me, don't jibe with how I feel. I've done control tests and they are all within range.
Move forward to today. I'm at work and feeling a bit low. I test and the meter says I'm 104. However I am starting to get the shakes, rapid heartbeat, dizzy, and irritable. I took some glucose tabs, ate some bread and eventually felt fine. I had just washed my hands, and the lancet was a new one. Security was ready to dial 911, my wife, and my doctors/as well as unhook my pump. Needless to say I gave everyone quite a scare.
On the way home I bought some strips for my Ultra Smart. Got home, calibrated it, and tested, 73. My Aviva said 89. And I was starting to feel dizzy again. That's quite a large difference IMHO.
Is it possible that blood type/RH factor can cause varying results that do not reflect how I feel? Or is it that one checks "whole blood"(Aviva), and the other checks "blood plasma"(UltraSmart). I thought that the plasma meter was supposed to read higher?
Any comments?

(They arent label readers and by the time dinner is served, the labels are in the trash.) But other than 4-5 spikes its almost always in that range. It just concerns me a bit that the meter reads normal and it doesnt reflect at all how I feel.

| | Though 73 and 89 isn't a HUGE difference, it is one that I don't like! I personally don't like the Aviva for that reason! It ALWAYS registered me high when I've tested using it. I also compared with an UltraSmart AND a Contour with the SAME drop of blood. Contour reads a bit higher, but much closer to the US than the Aviva! I really only bought the Aviva cuz I wanted the MultiClix lancet device, and I got it with the Aviva for a whopping $11 or something like that, as opposed to nearly 30 freakin dollars for the lancet device when bought alone! That's SO lame!! But I did test out the Aviva though, didn't like it. So it's stored away, along with the rest of my "meter collection" in a drawer here! At least I've got lotso spares, yanno, just incase!

| | | My accu-chek Avivas have also been reading high. Makes it especially scary when I see a low number to know that I'm probably lower than it says.

| | | My new one arrived yesterday. So far I have done 4 tests with it. I'm also testing with my US as a comparison.
US Aviva
108 119
81 103
100 97
86 97
I'm, going to keep testing this way for a while. If the aviva keeps going high, I'll see if the VA will authorize me the strips for my US. Most likely they wont. But its worth a shot

| | | Oh man that Aviva is super sensitive, it like reads a lot of times higher then what you are, I have to scrub my hands when I feel low that happened to me at work I felt off, and it said 104, then I ran and scrubbed my hands and I was 71 hmmm....it always does that, so I noticed the accu-checks are more sensitive to dirty hands then the one touch.......I just gotta another one touch from the dr's a ultra smart, gonna get some teststrips soon too......sometimes I don't have time to constantly scrub my hands espeicially a quick check at work...

| | | I spoke with the nurse at the VA today. Tomorrow I am going down there and they want to check the meter. I did inform her that it was a brand new meter, just shipped from Accu-Check. I also told her that I will be bringing my US along as well since that jibes exactly with how I feel. She said that the VA doesnt pay for the strips for it. At this point I dont care. I'd rather pay the $40 a month for the One Touch strips, then use a meter that doesnt read me properly.

| | | If 40 bucks covers your strips for a month that means you're only testing a couple of times a day at most....you could still be running high bg's during the part of the day that you're not testing....if a bg of 70-something makes you feel like you might need to call 911 then this is probably the case... |

| | | I have an Aviva - about 2 years old - and a new Ultra2. I've compared the results, using the very same drop of blood. I've never noted any significant differences in the meters. Usually they read within 2 to 5 points of the same.

| | I ran a test at the VA today, their big meter - 76, the Aviva - 93, my US - 78.
I talked it over with the nurse and the pharmacist, Im going to use my US and print out the results for them. Quote: |

| I test a minimum of 4 times a day. Right before meals and at night before bed.
If I'm feeling "off" I'll do extra testing as needed.

| | | Hi,
I'm new to this forum and found it because I was looking for information on others who may have experienced problems with the Accu-check Aviva meters.
My husband just received his second one and has pretty much given up on using it because the readings are so weird. |
