| | | I just got my free Freestyle Freedom Lite meter.
I've just dumped my Accu-Chek Advantage (required too big a sample for me to easily give), and I will decide between either this Freestyle, the Accu-Chek Aviva, or the Bayer Contour.
I've accumulated freebies of all of the above over the past year in advance of this switchover.
My main issue is the cost of the strips. My insurance sucks, and they only give me 50 strips a month for a $30 copay. Which is a terrible deal - I can get strips much cheaper on ebay.
So far, it looks like on ebay, that Aviva strips can be gotten for around $20/50, and Bayer Contour strips for around $15/50.
This may be the fatal flaw for the Freestyle Freedom Lite, as nice a meter as it seems to be, the strips don't seem to be nearly as widely available on ebay, and when they are, they seem to go for at least $25/50
All things being equal, the cost of the strips to me is definitely pointing toward the Bayer Contour. I also saw that Consumer Reports rated it higher than the Accu-Chek Aviva for accuracy and consistency. As far as ease of use is concerned, I slightly prefer the Aviva, but the Contour is very close to as easy to use. I haven't tried the Freestyle yet. I dumped the OneTouch Ultra2 and UltraMini because I found them cumbersome to use (plus, the strips go for at least $25/50 on ebay) |

| | New Freedom Lite I got my Freedom Lite with a coupon in Diabetes Forecast and no prescription was needed. I've been using it for a couple of weeks and like it better than my older meter. The little lancing device with it doesn't take as much blood (less painful by far) and since you need less of a drop for this meter this is preferable. I still haven't figured out all the bells and whistles on this meter but it works for me. : |

| | | No up front cost for my strips P.S. I didn't mention but I am on Medicare and also have secondary insurance so I am allowed 100 strips a month (plus lancets) without having to buy them on EBay or at the local drugstore. They come to me by mail from one of those companies that get reimbursed by Medicare and insurance (Not Liberty). |

| | | I was at the Step Out Walk in KC on the 27th and there was a rep giving out free Free Style Promise cards. Basically, that is a sort of "members only" program that has lots of benefits to it without any kind of fee. I called the number last Monday, and I had my new meter on Wednesday. My doctor called in my prescription for the strips, and with the Promise program they are only a $15 copay.
With the program you pay the first $15 of the copay and they pay up to $50 after that. It;s much less expensive than the strips for my Breeze 2. If you type in "Freestyle promis program" to Google it will take you to the website with an 800 number to sign up. |

| | | Yes since they came out with the new Lite meters, they are not replacing the older Flash or Freedom meters. They will send a new Lite meter and replace the older freestyle strips with lite strips.
It does not happen with every one that you talk to when you call, I think it just depends on who answers. |

| | | I got mine; now I have questions Hi all...
I just got my free Freestyle Freedom Lite via Fed Ex last night. It just happens that I sent for it last week before I was actually diagnosed. Then, the doctor gave me the same one...so, now I have two.
Do the same brand of meters vary in their results? Would it be a good idea to use both (one at work, one at home)? Or, should I just use the same meter all of the time?
Just wondering.
Thanks,
Lori |

| | | Every meter has a 20% variance acceptability rate as set by the FDA, but I would think that two meters of the same comapny would read approximately the same. I think it's a good idea to have on stashed at work and one at home.
I love my Freestyle Lite and that will be my main meter, but when and if my purple one touch mini ever shows up, it will stay in my purse should I forget my meter. They're not even the same company!
The only thing about using two meters is making sure that you record. If you have the data cable to use their software, I'm not sure how it would work with two meters. If you don't use a data cable, it shouldn't matter.

| | | No cable Hi...
I don't have a cable, but I'm recording everything in a little notebook. I just made a glucose log in excel so I can monitor my numbers a little better with averages, minimums, and maximums each day. Hopefully, that will help me stay on track...once I get on track.
In the past two days I've discovered that I can't eat honey ham sandwiches or english muffins with jelly. It's probably a no brainer, but I figure this is a trial and error process for the next few weeks. I think I'm looking at a pretty steep learning curve. Oh well, I like the occasional challenge.
Thanks for the response!!

| | | Have you seen a dietician? The best thing you can do is learn to carb count, and a dietician or Certified Diabetes Educator can help you with that.
