Any Clues?

My friend is having trouble getting her 9yo to change his lancet. I have no advise, because I don't really change my own until I need to... *cough*

Any ideas on what to tell him?

I suppose a sharp lance would be kinder to his fingers.

2high,all she can do is tell him why,and unless she's right there with him each and every time she'll have to trust him to do it. To tell you the truth I don't really know the "real" reasons they tell you to change them,with "every "single change. I used to do that,but If a person uses alcohol swabs and all,then why "every time? I can see after a few times because they say the needle wears down,but if it's still comfortable and doesn't cause any extra pain,then why not? Why does your friend want him to?Is it because that's what she was instructed to do,we all were. He's the one who's going to be doing all the work so let him be the judge,right? what do you think?

Why is she picking this as her battle? If he doesn't care about the lancet but is testing....who cares???

What will she say when he's 15 and doesn't test more than 2x a week?

My advice: let him be, just tell him where the lancets are when he wants one.

Show her this thread and the others on this forum about all of us that DO NOT change it until it hurts.

It's just something people don't understand...unless they do it themselves.
But seriously, after almost 24 years none of my fingers have fallen off. Oh and my mom is a nurse and I don't think she changed them when I was 2 and my parents tested me from my toes!

I'm KIDDING.....I don't know, I can't even remember the last time I changed mine...I do it when my fingers get sore.
Best child-rearing advise I ever got was to "choose your battles wisely." Personally, this isn't one I would choose, were I in her shoes.

Does he eat all his or her vegetables?

Ah, did anyone tell him or her that not changing their lancet is a very bad offense, punishable by 35 lashes with a wet noodle?

Gee, if all this kid has done is this I'm sure glad that ain't my Mom.

Beat me with a clothes Hanger..

when I spoke to one of the nurses at my Endos office, she told me that while it is recommended, its NOT a set in stone rule. as long as you keep your hands clean, it's not a big deal.

Yeah, I agree with other posters, this is really not a big deal. Even the lancet selling companies are only claiming now that you should change it often for "optimal comfort" - not infection concerns.
