| | | Sensor sites I inserted my second sensor tonight.
When I went in to my docs office for training, I wanted to put the sensor in my thigh. I use Sils there and they are comfortable and work great. They were really opposed to the idea of using the sensor there. I couldn't figure out why..
Well, this evening, I put the sensor in to my thigh. Ouch. I'm very lean (5'9"/150) and the sensors are seemingly just too long to wear in my thigh. I angled it less than 45 for sure, yet still, when I stood up and used my leg muscles, I felt the sensor tip poking them, meaning a sharp painful jab. No way I could just deal with it for a week or more. Lesson learned.
Not wanting to waste the $35 sensor, I pulled it out, and very carefully rethreaded the introducer needle on to the sensor wire. I put the protective shield back on the needle to re-lubricate the needle, as the sleeve had lubricant still on its inside walls. I then re-inserted the sensor in to my abdomen, and am waiting on my first calibration. Hope it goes well.. the isig is 23.17 right now, so it is looking hopeful.
I don't recommend that others do this, just sharing my experience.

| | | I put my last sensor in my thigh for the first time. I use the comforts which are like the sils. However...I use the comfort short. Maybe you should see if they make a short sil.
The sensor went in fine and feels fine besides itching to no end. The main problem I see with using the thighs is being careful to stay away from the pockets (I didn't think of that when I inserted and now depending on which pants I wear and how low the pocket goes is if I can put my keys in that pocket.)

| | | Kevin, I didn't know you had started on a CGMS! Which one?
I do use the short version of the comfort/sil sets.

| | Shane, like you, I've re-threaded sensors (2) when I didn't want to waste the $35. One time, it worked, but the other time, when I went to pull the introducer needle out, the sensor part went inverted (Oops!). I haven't put in my last sensor yet (of my second 4 pack), but will probably do so right before my trip. The boys usually want to know what my BGs are at any given time while traveling, so it will be handy for them to see for themselves...I still poke to test (a lot), but if I am sure that the sensor is right, then I won't poke.
I've not used my thighs....not because I'm thin, but because I have a great deal of muscle there & almost every time I've tried a shot or infusion set there, I've had issues (i.e. bruising, swelling, bleeding, etc.).
It does suck when sensors don't work....esp. at $35 a pop! Here's hoping your re-insertion worked well.
