| | | Help,Elevated Ketones.... hello everyone,i have some questions and concerns i am really hopeing you fellow diabetics can help me out with.
about 8 months ago i was diagnosed with type 2 and have been takeing shots of levimir.
Recently my doctor went on vacation and will not be back for another week, unfortunatly my doc denied my last levimir refill because he wants to see me,But i cannot get in till he returns. i have started takeing multivitamins and have noticed that if i watch what i eat my blood sugar levels do not rise more then 150-160mg/dl after a meal. and return to normal ranges after a couple hours, when i am at work i can eat much more and my blood glucose will go down much faster.
now what i am concerned about is i just checked my urine for Ketones using the Keto stix. according to the ketostix my ketone level is about 25 mg/dl wich according to some sources is a moderate level,my blood sugar at the time of testing for ketones was at 96 mg/dl.
can someone help me out here should i go see a doc in the meantime to get a refill on my insulin in the meantime before my doctor comes back.
i am very new to this disease and could really use some help from you great people.
thank you very much!

| | | Welcome.
My first thought is you should ditch your doctor and see an endocrinologist. Not renewing your levemir is tantamount to blackmail!
I can't help you with the ketones. Fortunately I have not been in your situation. X my fingers. Others will chime in eventually. Keep checkin back.

| | | I second the motion. If you doctor will deny your insulin, which is a life saving medication, you need to ditch him and find a doctor that has your best interest at heart.
Keep your carbohydrates to a minimum, drink lots of water to keep your kidneys flushed and if your blood sugar is in the normal range you should walk or some other mild exercise. Don't exercise if you blood sugar is high.
Good luck and keep us posted. |

| | | Hi Walter,
Can you third a motion? If so, I'm with the others. Your doc is playing it pretty fast and loose by not refilling your insulin, What would have been wrong with refilling it and still seeing you in a while?
Now keep in mind I'm not a Doctor, but I run low to moderate for ketones all of the time because I eat extremely low carb. They are a natural by-product of fat digestion by your body. If you are pretty much skipping carbs and eating mostly protein and fats with a few veggies (not potatoes!) you are probably normal.
Keep your sugar where it is. Drink water. Do your normal exercise and keep good records of all of your tests and meds.
If your ketones go any higher, call your doctor's on-call person (who will have access to your records) or find another doctor.
Sounds like you are doing a good job,

| | | I agree with all of the above. I have recently been in the ER because of high BGs and spilling ketones in the large range (stomach virus) - I was told that diabetics often spill a few ketones and that was quite usual.

Mich | i really appreciate all your advice,i am extremly grateful for this forum because this disease is still sort of a mystery to me.
i do eat low carbs whenever i can,i always look at the nutrition facts,if i get a burger from burger king i take one of the buns off and remove the tomato.i try not to eat fast food allot, and will opt for a chicken salas or ceasar salad whenever possible.my weight has been staying steady at 170,i have started takeing insulin and noticed that i needed to take a little less inulin since ive been on the one a day mens viatimins and Chromax chromium suppliment. since i have been denied on the refil,i have not taken a insulin shot for 5 days now, just the viatimins, and blood sugars seem to be much lower then when i WAS on the insulin,i know for a fact that i can keep it under control if im very mindful of what i eat.
the keytone level concerns me though,i real allot about how there very damaging,im 25 years old and want to live a good life, unfortunatly i was dealt this hand and will have to deal with it.
so to recap i was on 25 units of levimir with still somewhat high BG levels, started multiviatimins and chromax, stopped takeing insulin and noticed much less suger sensitivity. obviously my body is using its own insulin better, but keytones are about 25 or so MG/dl wich is considered to be low/moderate.i do not eat many carbs, and stay away from sugar except when i am hypo and need a lil boost with a starburst or somthing.
once again thank you all,and i look forward to hearing what others have to say,all your advice really helps. |

| | Ketones without high blood sugar are probably not a problem. The are not harmful in small quantites. In fact, most people produce some ketones during the night. Eating low-carb, losing weight, and sustained exercise can cause ketones to be produced too.
