when to take more?

When I wake up I test. Then take my lantus for the day and humulog for the meal I'm about to eat.
So my question is, after I wait 2-2.5 hrs to check again and my bg is high, should I take more humulog or should I not since I've taken lantus? Is lantus there for a situation like this? I don't want to take more humulog and end up getting low if lantus will take care of it anyway....? confused!

it depends on how high, but I usually correct with one to 1.5 unit of fast acting (Novolog, humalog, etc) for every 50 points high I am..

for example if 2.5 hours after eating I'm at 250, I'll take 3-4 units of Novolog to correct for it

you should maybe start there and see how that does for ya..

You should consider Lantus as being a whole different animal in a way.. Lantus is there to take care of the glucose your liver is naturally producing, so you shouldn't really use it too much in the food equation...

good luck

The purpose of Lantus is to keep your blood glucose down in the absence of food . If your blood glucose is going up and staying high after eating, it could mean three things. Either you aren't using enough Lantus to satisfy your basal insulin needs, or you didn't inject enough insulin to cover your meal, or both.

In the short-term you need to correct those blood glucose excursions with extra Novolog. But you really need to understand why they are occuring so that you can modify your insulin dosing in such a way that they don't happen anymore. Doing this requires the basal testing I refered to in my previous post.
