| | | Scary!! It started off as any other day. I woke up, checked my sugars, took my humalog/lantus and went on with my day. Well an hour later I felt like I was really high so I checked again and I was right. I was at 423!! All I ate for berakfast was a small bowl of cereal and took a little more humalog then usual just to cover it. I continued to be high throughout the day and in a time span of 4 hours I took 57 units of humalog! I did not any food during this time yet my sugars were still high. During that time I did nothing but watched t.v. and checking my sugars every half hour. I had food ready in case I was to drop and have a low attack...but that never happened.
Can anyone tell me why it could have taken soo long for my sugars to come down? |

| | | Is there any chance your insulin got overheated and isn't any good? Do you have any symptoms of infection?

| | | I keep both insulins in the fridge. I was going through some sinus problems the last 2 weeks but I am ok now. Would that have anything to do with it? |

It would have raised it's ugly head long before this.
Do you by chance mix these insulins? You're not supposed to.
Do you have scar tissue buildup? Was it a "lean" site? It sounds like bad absorption to me. |

| | | Paul,
With lots of testing you will eventually find out how many points of blood sugar are lowered by one unit of fast insulin. For me it's 50. If I had been 423 and wanted to get down to 100, I would have to take 6.5 units. I would have had to add that to the cereal and milk, which would have been about 3 more units for me. (I don't eat much cereal or milk for that reason.)
A better breakfast if you are already high would have been a couple of scrambled eggs with cheese. That would have been 0 to .5 units for me. Also, when you are high, drink lots of water to help "rinse" the sugar though your kidneys and avoid Keto-acidosis.
The suggestions already offered are good ones. Sometimes the insulin isn't working for some reason, or you are stressed by sickness or pain and your liver is releasing glucose.
Hang in there. Mich |

| | | Hi,
When we experience unusually high numbers for awhile like you describe we usually are getting sick with a cold or virus. Did you feel well otherwise?
Anomolies like this are always frustrating.

| | | When my blood sugar goes up into the 400-500 range it takes a whopping dose or several to bring my blood sugar down. Usually, I end up crashing. My guess would be you possibly got higher at some point than your meter was showing. You become extremely resistant when you get that high.
xMenace is right. You should not mix Lantus and Humalog if that is what you are doing. |

| | Bolus & Exersice Perhaps if you had some fast acting and go for a walk or something that would get the hart pumping if you're high.
And of course take some OJ with you just in case.
I can remember the mixing of insulins as this is not the practice today. The protaphane and the actrapid I did mix as this is old insulins as for me those insulins are not used by me anymore.
