Sticking yourself..... sometimes..

I use the Ascensia Contour, and have a problem with the lancet. Sometimes it will stick me, and sometimes it won't. I am thinking it is the depth in which it is inserted.
I have tried different depths, and even the adjustment for the deepest stick, and still it is hit and miss. Sometimes I must have something right, because when it sticks, it really sticks..... like ouch!!!
So what is the correct way to insert the lancet for use?
Thanks

It shouldn't matter which depth you put the lancet into the device, i think you're supposed to put it in as far as it wants to go. Sounds to me like you either have a faulty lancet device, or a lancet device that doesn't fit you. I suggest you change to a new lancet device, either of the same kind, or another kind. I can definitely recommend the Accu-Chek Softclix or Multiclix if you change to another lancet device. Sure, they can't use all kinds of lancets, but they're VERY comfortable to use

Or is the problem that you can't find the depth setting fit for you? Again, maybe another device could do the trick.

Thanks for the reply. I have been looking at the Accu-Chek, and it looks good to me. I also like the less pain part.

My main poker is the Multiclix, and 99% of the time i don't know if i have pricked myself or not until i get that drop of blood out I just hear the click, but don't feel the lancet. It's just on the odd occassion i'll feel some pain, but it's more because of using fingers that tends to hurt more. My thumbs tends to hurt a bit, while index fingers and especially middle fingers doesn't hurt at all. I hate using ringfingers and littlefingers because they can hurt a lot

I also have the Softclix that comes attached to the Compact meter, but mainly use that for Alternative Test Sites like arms since it's so handy to use the meter and pricker together, just using one hand.

Hey Icon,

I have the Accu-Check and use their Lancet thing set on 4.
Seems to work every time for me. Also I buy the test strips
from American Diabetes WareHouse? Wholesale? Not sure but
I save a ton since I have to pay for my own supplies.

Regards,

Jim

Are you pulling back on the device a bit as you press the button? Some people tend to do as an automatic reaction. Try setting the depth somewhere in the middle, press the device firmly to your finger and don't pull back or relax! Then press the button and see what happens.

I hold it pressed against the skin, and sometimes the point does not even touch the skin. I always have to put it on the highest setting, and then try several times to get it to stick. And then sometimes it over sticks...

I find it helps to kinda squeeze you finger slightly to make it bulge into the little hole area

I'm with Upnorth on the lancet device favorite. I love the softclix that came with my compact plus, I detached it and now keep it with my walgreens meter and absolutely love it. It's just so comfortable to use. As to the current one you have giving you issues, I would have to agree that it's probably either just the type that doesn't work for you or that particular one you're using is faulty and maybe another of the same kind will work better or just another type in general will be better for your style etc. Definitely explore every possibility. My take on lancet devices is they're a part of the meter supplies so try what you can and find one that fits you best.

I use the ultrasoft poker that came with my ultrasmart. I agree with the others about poss changing pokers, but first get in contact with Ascencia and see if they will exchange it for a new one, if that still doesn't work then i would say try a different make.

Most sticking devices I have seen, do allow you to adjust the depth of the stick, but you should always put the lancet in as far as it will go into the device itself. While it is possible you have a faulty device, I also suspect that you are unconsciously pulling back at the last instant... I still do it myself from time to time Also don't feel constrained to stick with (hah!) the device that came with your meter Wash you hands with warm water before to make sure you have a ready supply of blood on hand...

Obesity and Type 2 are strongly associated. Most people assume that Obesity is the cause and Diabetes the effect. It is equally valid to suggest that the underlying metabolic disorder which leads to the Type 2 causes the Obesity.

Gosh, UpNorth, I think you just sold a meter. I would so love not to feel anything.

I like the Multiclix, myself. You will need to read the instructions that go with it, but once you get the hang of it, it's a good poker. The only problem is that it is big. It's about six inches long and probably an inch around. I'd like to see a "Multiclix mini." That would be nice.

LOL Maybe it's just my fingers being too used to being poked, so i don't feel it, or maybe it is my rather high pain threshold. But really... 99% of the time, i do not feel needles at all I had a vaccination the other day, and the needle was 23G and the vaccination fluid was 1ml, straight into my arm and i didn't even notice it happening even though i was looking at it

But, i have noticed that some finger pokers can hurt more than others.. I find the multiclix more comfortable than the softclix even, though many might find the softclix less painful. Others might hate both of those and prefer the oddity (it really looks wierd!) that comes with the Xeed meter, or the one that comes with the Contour. It's so individual
