Need some clarification please.

In my first post, I mentioned that I did not know if I had, or will ever have diabetes, but my Dad had it, and some past tests cause me to have some concern about it. So I am keeping an eye on it.
I know fasting levels, are before your eat, but I am not sure what the one hour level should be to still be normal.
I generally eat what I want (burgers, pizza, taco bell etc), and I am sure it will go up some without diabetes, even higher with candy and sodas, but have no idea what readings I should have.
So I guess my question is, given the error of meters (use the Ascensia Contour), after the one hour wait, at what reading should I start to worry?
And if I pig out of sweets and sodas, what should it be after one hour?
I am just not sure at what point (meter reading) to make a Dr's visit.

I am not sure either but for a diabetic they want us to be under 180 immediately after eating, under 160 1 hour after taking the first bite of the meal, and under 140 2 hour after. I was told that the BG # of a person without D will return to near normal in less than 2 hours after eating a big meal. I am sure there are others on the forum with much more knowledge than me. I had only been diagnoised for a few months. Do you have any symptoms that make you think you have D. Keep us posted.

If you regularly get a reading of more then 126 then I'd recomend you started watching what you eat.
Theres no point in taking a reading until after 2 hrs after food.
Why not take the opportunity now to start eating healthy & exercise. Avoid white bread & stick to wholegrain. Limit the amt of white potatoes etc

Test 2 hours after your first bite of food. If you're above 8mmol/l (144) at the 2h mark more than once, and you test again at 3h and still not gone down much, then you should see your doctor for more tests. Or if you ever test above 10mmol/l (or is it 11mmol/l...) (180-198) then you should also see your doctor for further tests.
Just having a little bit higher reading once doesn't mean you have diabetes, it's when it's more than once, or extremely high it's time to start suspecting it. Do you have any symtoms?

Before i was diagnosed with diabetes, like a year before... I tested once with a friend's meter, and it said 9.3mmol/l (167), but an hour later i was down to normal again... So that one bit high reading didn't mean anything. I'm type 1, and only started experiencing symtoms about 1 month or so before i was diagnosed. The onset of type 1 can be very fast...

A healthy non-diabetic wouldn't go over 130, even after a big glucose load. So if up are going over, say, 160 an hour after eating, I would be concerned.

Thanks for the replies.... I don't really know what the symptoms I should be looking for are.
I get really jittery after eating, like a megadose of caffine, and my heart starts pounding hard. Not fast, just hard. Blood pressure is normal.
As I said, my Dad had it, and it's possible I could, so I want to watch for the early signs.
A hospitial glucose test about a year ago was normal, but things change over time.
I'm 50 now, and will be 51 on June 21, so I want to try and live a better life.
I take vitamins, minerals and herbs for my heart, prostrate, immune system and most every other body part I can think of.
I could almost make a meal out of what I take every day.

Ok some of the symptoms to look out for are craving sweet drinks all the time, going to the toilet a lot more than usual and when you do your urine smells sickly sweet and/or is dark coloured, confusion, nausea, lethargy. All these symptoms can also be a sign of many other conditions that's why it's important to go to your Dr at the first instance. In general i would also try to cut down the amount of vitamins and supplements you take, a good varied, healthy diet and lifestyle will be far more beneficial for you. This is just advice, i don't mean to be bossy.

Thanks for the info, the more I know about what to watch for the better.
I live alone up in the sticks of NorthWest Arkansas, and don't cook. When I'm here, it's canned or instant food.
I drive 40 miles to town for work, and eat in town, so generally it's whatevers fast and easy.
Maybe I need a wife, so she can..... ehhhh, nevermind. Been there, done that.
