Usually when I get a new lancet device! I started using an Accu-Chek Softclix device 10-11 years ago. It was given to me, brand new, along with an unopened box of 100 lancets. It was my main device since I got it, but there was a period of months where I used another device until it broke, and again when my original Softclix broke. The time spent using other devices added up to less than a year out of those 10-11.

I got a new Softclix last year and it came with some sample lancets. The original probably did, too. 5 or 10 each is what they usually give. I just counted the # left in my original box of 100 and there are 97 left. I know there are some strays in various meter cases, too.

Short answer:I change less than once a year. I just started using a Multiclix last month, which came with two drums (12 lancets total) and I'm set for the next decade+.

I'm not understanding why all of you wouldn't change your lancet every time. They are cheap and I can change it out in my one-touch device in about 5 seconds..

Just curious and kinda suprised.

This thread is a hoot. I rarely change mine anymore either. That was my thought with the 6 shooter too - "this out to last many years".

In response to Eric - for me, I'm apparently too lazy to spend that extra 5 seconds every time. That, or I just a lancet-hoarder.

I change mine every time. I'm sure infections are rare, but if I got infected just once, I would kick myself for the few cents I was saving. I just got a free multiclix a few weeks ago with my Aviva meter and it's soooo much better than the freestyle lancet. Now I keep the multiclix with my freestyle and the aviva stays in the drawer with the old Abbott lancet.

I used to use each one once but now I do the same and just change it when it feels dull. A lot of the time it takes me a while to realize that it is in fact dull.

Lancets! Lancets! I don't need no stinking lancets. Stick my finger in the garbage disposal, give the switch a bumb, and walah! Blood for a week.

Hey- Guys!!
Lancets are designed to only be used once, and then disposed of in a safe way. Using a lancet just once will make it more blunt, and therefore more painful to use. There are a variety of ways of getting rid of used lancets safely as they can carry infection. Some companies sell sharps boxes, and GPs can even prescribe sharps bins to dispose of lancets safely.

Be safe, you no it makes sense.

Reading this thread takes a load off my mind. I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE!!!!!!!

At first I faithfully changed it after every use. Over time, I have gotten lazy, and now change them....sometimes. I have no rhyme or reason as to when I change them, just whenever I think about it, and feel guilty, I'll change it.

This is my situation exactly. I test my husband or family members occasionally, and change it to test them. I keep 2-4 spares in the pack.

I change my lancet out, if someone around me wants to have a bg check, I use the accucheck auto clix with the drum anyway, so Ummmm lets' see this lady three or four months ago wanted me to test her bg so it's been about that long....honestly....like i said I don't have a particular time, I just do it when someone wants to be tested....

At the beginning I changed for every use. Now - I do it when the spirit moves me, which is maybe every couple of weeks.

I thought of this thread when I tried to check my pre-breakfast number. I literally poked 7 of my fingers, increased the depth setting a number or 2, tried at least 3 more times and still no blood. My first thought was, where has all of my blood gone ('cause it's not in my fingers)?! Then, I realized it was time to change the lancet
