Question My Glucometer Readings

Today - I got a hold of my first glucometer (One Touch Ultra-Mini).

I immediatly made myself a guinea pig/pin cushion.

I tested:

before lunch: 98
1 hour post: 132
2 hour post: 122
3 hour post: 131

Lunch = two low carb tortillas & 3oz turkey breast (14 carbs)

Is my three hour readings off? I would have thought they would drop. I was going for eating something small every three hours and assumed it would drop back down to my before lunch readings.

Experience please?

~Danielle

Hey Danielle, great that you are now testing. Try not to over-think a single reading. It is better to build up a picture over several days; logging BS levels, food, activity, mood and how you feel I wish I could tell you that D is an exact science but it isn't. Also home meters are not as accurate as we would all wish. When I get a reading that doesn't jibe with my expectations, I usually retest on another finger/hand... more often than not you will get a different result the second time... maybe you didn't use quite enough blood the first time, or you squeezed your finger too much (which can dilute the sample with plasma), or you had been handling some food or other contaminant, or the stars were not aligned just so It happens to us all... Put it down as a learning experience

Could also be that the protein in turkey takes longer to digest in your system... but again, you can't tell that from a single test.

Obesity and Type 2 are strongly associated. Most people assume that Obesity is the cause and Diabetes the effect. It is equally valid to suggest that the underlying metabolic disorder which leads to the Type 2 causes the Obesity.

i have done various tests along these lines.

sometimes i see a drop at 3 hours and sometimes not.

if i am high-ish at 3 hours PostP AND i am hungry, i go for a ZERO carb snack like pork crackle or salami or cheese.

as long as i am near or below 140 (7.8) i am happy.

if i am 140-180 i don't mind. but i prefer to stay <140.

As Frank say's the 3 hour high could be the turkey, the 1 hour spike could be the tortilla's. Your two hour reading was very good, but again as Frank has said don't base things on a single reading or single series of readings. Now that you have your meter, eat, test, learn - it's the best way to find out what is working for you. I too like wraps and have found that it is well worth checking the information on several brands as I found some wraps make locally (yeah tortillas made in Ireland !) and found them to be lower in carbs than some marked as low-carb.

Too right Frank, think we've all had the day of eating the samethings, doing the samethings as always and having higher/lower readings (normally higher ) but as you said it's not a matter of basing things on a single test/reading.

Joel, I tend to go for cheese but LOVE the idea of pork crackle (yum). The problem I have is walking the line between managing BG and losing weight, so a high fat snack like cheese is great BG wise but I need to be careful from weight loss side of things, oh the joys of the balancing act That said I'd sooner go for the fatty snack than a carby snack.

What was the fat content? I assume there was more food that you didn't mention. Fats supposedly can induce theis scenario.

Next time you get an unexpected reading, wash your hands and do a re-test.

It is conceivably a normal error: 131 - 20% = 105. 131 - 10% = 118.

Fage Greek yogurt is great - IMO. The fat free yogurt is 0 Fat, 6 Carbs, 15 protein. It's thick and creamy. I sweeten mine with a little Splenda (sucralose). It is great plain as well.

I'm not sure of the fat content. It had to be low for the wraps itself. I did have a packet of Coromega (fish oil). That was all I ate for lunch: two low carb tortilas with 3oz turkey, fish oil, water. They sat in my stomach for awhile. I eat every three hours so that was sufficient for me.

Thank you all for the advice. The rest of my numbers last night and this morning were in the "normal" range. I know that isn't the end all be all but, it is the most positive thing that has happened since my diagnosis last week. It was comforting and I'm grateful the people on this forum advised me to get the meter.
