| | Hi Sammy,
The different types of insulin each have a profile established by tests before they are released. Google "compare types of insulin" and you will get several sources. The paperwork that comes with each bottle also explains how that particular type is expected to work.
That said, each person reacts a little differently because of various factors. Also, how high you are to begin with also affects insulin resistance. You tend to need more insulin if you are really high.
I use Novolog which is a quick acting insulin. It starts working for me in 10 or 15 minutes and goes for about 3-4 hours. Most of the action occurs within the first two hours. If I correct a high reading, I test at two hours, then again at three to see how it is going. If needed, I add more. When I first started Humalog, I tested every hour or even half hour to get an idea how it worked with me.
I don't eat if I am higher than 200 until I get my reading lower.
If I am lower than that, I correct right after the test, and eat with a pre-bolus for what I expect to eat, then might correct again if I went over my expected carbs. I do this now with a pump, but used to do it with injections
I think 100 was a good figure to aim for until I got good at judging how fast acting insulin worked for me. With that, I meandered between 80 and 120. But remember, I'm not a doctor nor have I ever played one on tv.

| | You can give yourself a correction bolus if you know how much one unit will lower you, and also keep in mind how much active rapid insulin you have in your body at the time. If i need to correct, i will correct, if i go a bit low later, i'll just eat something then. It's quite individual how fast the rapid is gone for you. For me, Novorapid is almost completely gone at hour 4.
I'm currently at 6.2 Quote:

you know if your a little high are you supposed to give yourself some fast acting to lower it a bit.??
if yes can you give some fast acting without eating anything?
and around about how long does the fast acting last in the body?
im a bit confused on this one.
thanks |

| | | 55 and feelin' it. 2 hours ago I was 72, had a plum and .75u of insulin to cover. Guess that was a mistake.

| | | 119 2 hrs after a very low-carb lunch. Woke up at 126. I'm still recovering from the stress of Mama's surgery, I'm sure.
Current reading? 109 3.5 hrs after lunch. Not too bad. I'm sure things will continue to improve the next couple of days.

| | | 107 two hours after eating hot dogs and cabbage cooked on the grill. Had two squares of dark chocolate for dessert.
It has been a little over a week since I stopped the metformin and even though the numbers climbed a little I am at 106 for a 14 day average.
