| | | AJ,
It is frustrating when you get mixed messages from your meter, most meters have an accuracy of about +/- 10 to 15%, that said if you meter jumped from 16 to 8.3 to 18.3, there is something wrong somewhere.
Is the battery in the meter ok?
Did you code the meter with the strips?
Are the strips within date?
Had you washed your hands before testing?
Had you been handling anything before testing (food, chemicals etc)?
I had one incident with my Contour meter where I got a reading of 21, after washing my hands this came way down to just of 11-12 (can't remember) this was in my early days. It was because I had been making dinner and had garlic and spices on my hands which I had not washed properly before testing.

| | | I had this with a Bayer Contour.
After 90 minutes on the phone with them it turned out to be a bad batch of strips.
Call one touch. They'll walk you thru the diagnostics.
As for which one is most accruate? They're all off to a degree.

| | | AJ,
I suggest calibrating your meter if you haven't already. Then if it still won't give a reliable reading get in touch with Lifescan and they should send you a new one. In my experience Onetouch are pretty good meters. I've used em for years and never had a serious problem, but that's just me i can't speak for anyone else.
good luck

| | | My hands were clean, i went through a whole bottle last night ( my blood wasn't cooperating, nor is it doing so now)
thankfully i saw my endo today (not about this but a checkup) and she also told me to call one touch (which i have before and they have replaced my meters before) and gave me a freestyle mini one to try...
i tried on both and i'm still getting weird results but i'm going to give it some time and see waht goes on
strips are fine - not touched any food, battery was fine and the strips were within the date.
it's quite frustrating!
thanks for all your suggestions though!

| | | I like my accucheck aviva. The readings are consistant but run a few points higher than my one touch mini. The only time i've had issues is when the battery gets tired. Their customer service department is also very helpful. When I had trouble with their old model they shipped stuff to me by next day air.(this was years ago now). |

| | | I know I've posted this before, and apologise for cross posting.
However, IMHO it really comes down to consistancy of readings...
As has already been mentioned, all meters only claim +/- 20% accuracy, so I want the one that's going to give the most consistant readings.
My personal favorite is the freestyle!
I own (in no particular order) the following meters:
* Abbott Freestyle Lite
* Abbott Freestyle Freedom
* Accu-Chek Aviva
* Bayer Contour
* One Touch Ultra Mini
* One Touch Ultra Smart
* One Touch Ultra 2
I have done extensive testing using Control solutions and 10 back to back readings on each meter, and have found the Freestyle series to be the most consistant.
I have found the Aviva to be #2 in consistancy (Very close to the Freestyle series) AND The aviva comes with a free Multiclix.
I give both the Freestyle Lite and Freestyle Freedom the highest marks.

| | | I use an Aviva too, and although it tends to run a little high, which really bothered me at first, I'm getting to where I like it.
But yeah, sounds like a call to the Lifescan people is in order.

| | | I live in a small town. The the pharmacist likes the one touch so when my doctor wrote a prescription for the Accu-Chek meter he changed it to the one touch. He does not keep enought strips for the Accu-Chek Aviva so I am forced to use the one touch. I prefer to use the Aviva. The strips fill easier and I find it easier to use. I think he makes more profit on the one touch.

To convert multipy his readings by 18, or divide yours by 18 to compare. There is a converter under Tools in the top bar, or on the side depending on which view your are using. |

| | | To further clarify, most U.S. meters read in the mg/dl form, while meters elsewhere read by mmol/L.
So dg, if you see someone talking about their BG reading 8.2, say, they're almost certainly from outside the U.S. Multiply their reading by 18 to see what it would read on your meter. Divide your numbers by 18 to see what it would read on a meter outside the U.S.
