I'm new to this, but I asked this question to a few different quarters and they all came back the same.

'It depends'.... which i have on good authority is an excellent answer to any medical question

Your endo or GP should give you goals. And those goals will depend on what type you are, how fit you are, how severe your diabetes is, what method of control you are using, how blue the sky is today.... etc

My before meals target is 7mmol/L (126mg/dL) or less. My after meals is 9mmol/L (162mg/dL).

There are different ranges. Most common is:

< 105 for Fasting
< 140 for 2 hr PP

Depends who you ask. The Joslin Center used to say <180 at 2 hours, <150 at 3 hours, but I know many people here strive for less than that. Just grabbed this from their site:

Goals for glycemic control for people with diabetes are:
• Average fasting plasma glucose: 90-130 mg/dl
• Average 2- hour postprandial plasma glucose: <160 mg/dl
• Average bedtime glucose: 110-150 mg/dl

The above was found at this link www. joslin.org/Files/Adult_Guideline_Graded.pdf

For some reason, I can't post a properly formatted link, so take the space out after www above.

I work on the basis of the following targets:

<110 (6.1) Fasting and random
<140 (7.7) 2 hours after first bite

I think a lot of people follow these targets. All I know is shooting for these targets has got my A1c way down in under a year.
