Testing 1 hour after eating

Does anyone else test their blood sugars 1 hour after eating?

I eat/inject at 8 a.m. and check at 9 and 10 a.m. The reason I do this is that historically, when I've had the worst hypos they happened in that 9-10 time frame. So I check for my husband's peace of mind. (and my own to a degree)

I'm not having that problem anymore, but I'm still cking at 9 and 10 which I prefer to do. But has anyone here tested an hour after eating? And what are your levels?

I frequently am in the 200's at 9, but my levels at 10 are almost always perfect. Seems like I drop pretty rapidly.

I was wondering if anyone else does this and what the results are?

I can't afford to but I sometimes will do it. When I have done it, my blood sugar is usually in the 180 to 240 range but I've sometimes had insulin reactions too.

Hi Heather,

I have similar results, but mine go a little closer to 11:00 AM. I will be in the low 200's an hour to 2 hours after. Then about 10:45 to 11:15, I drop like a rock! By 12:00, I am always in the 90-120 range. If I take more novolog in the morning, I drop much faster at 11:00 and have a hypo pre-lunch. If I take less, then I am high pre-lunch. The rest of my day I am a "model" citizen; no major variations.

My endo and CDE say it is most likely a morning insulin resistence. They say it is a fairly common condition of diabetics. This is one reason they are keen to get me on a pump. They say that I will be able to control this by setting a higher morning basal rate and keep the same bolus.

Anyway, that is what is wrong with ME! Hope that helps.

Thanks to both of you, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one running around with sugars in the 200's right after eating.

I drop really fast too Koblenz. It's almost like, if my sugar is under 180 one hour after eating, I can pretty much predict that I'll have a hypo by 10 a.m. And like you, the rest of the day I do quite well.

Heather,

I have been testing at both 1 hr and 2 hrs after eating for some time. The height of the peak peak is determined by the amount of carbs in the meal. And I find that 40+ grams of carbs produces 220+ 1hr peaks.

The trick is inject just enough insulin to bring the bsl back into the target range after 2-3 hrs. I have always found getting this right really hard. But it becomes a lot easier when carbs are replaced with protein/fat. I have reduced the carbs to about 15grams per meal. And the bsl generally peaks at about 160 after an hour.

Cheers,

Mark

Heather,

I don't do it regularly but have once in a while. Like you I have found that 1 Hour B/Gs run near 200/11.1 but then 2 hour readings are "Just Fine"

Mostlt I know this without checking now, as my vision goes to &%&^% when my B/G goes above 130/7.2 and then settles back down after B/G returns below110/6.1
