| | Normal C - Peptide test while already taking insulin... Does the c-peptide test get affected if your taking insulin
and have taking your basal dose, then went early in morning to get lab done. Is there a possibility that would make it show normal even if your not making insulin.

| | | No. C-peptide is produced by your pancreas on a 1 to 1 basis with the insulin it makes, but is not present in insulin you inject or infuse. That's why it is such a good test for that purpose.
So it is a good test of how much insulin you are making, but not of how much you are capable of making.

| | | Well, insulin injected would slow down your pancreatic production if anything ... which would mean, without insulin, it would have been higher.
Sounds like you are T2 ... have not heard MY results yet but will let you know when I do.

Im overweight but not as i had been before. So if i was t2 i would of been cured or atleast on less meds instead of more. No pills work only insulin and if i miss my insulin for a day and only take pills my sugars are up in the 400s close 500s times that i check

| | | Did you receive the actual lab values or did the doc just say that all was fine?
Were you tested for antibodies as well? |

| | What was your level (and the lab reference range)? You still may not be a T2 even with a relatively "normal" c-peptide. If it was high, that would be a sign of T2 for sure, because that's a strong sign of insulin resistance, but a low to normal level doesn't confirm or rule out anything really. You need antibody testing to be sure, but even if that's negative, it doesn't 100% rule out Type 1 or 1.5 entirely.
My c-peptide was initially in the "normal" range, though on the lower end.
Taking insulin usually results in a lower c-peptide for most, since it's reducing the load on your pancreas. I know that this was one reason my first doctor (an internist) got SO angry with me for taking insulin on my own.
My story is a little complicated though, but I was also 20 at diagnosis. It took me nearly a year to FINALLY be diagnosed correctly. I've actually been diagnosed with everything but MODY
I am a typical T1 though, not a 1.5 - it's more the way I was diagnosed and the timing that made it confusing. Most doctors just don't seem to want to consider Type 1 without a patient going into DKA and ending up in the hospital. |

| | | Not every type 2 will get better with weight loss, diet, and exercise. There are many who do everything right but still need insulin. That's not to say that you are type 2, but there is no cure for diabetes. Even somebody who is "cured" by weight loss or exercise will still have to watch their carbs. If they stop watching carbs or gain back the weight they will be right back where they were.
Contrary to popular belief, you can still be thin and have type 2. There are several on this board I believe, and a fair number on Diabetes Daily who have never been overweight but have Type 2. Weight is only one factor in insulin resistance.

| | | I finally got the results to my c-peptide and the doc called me first and then i went in and saw her to confirm it the next day. I am a type 1. My c-peptide was 0.6 with a lab range of .8-3.1
My a1c went up .1 its now at 8.3, she said when it comes down to around 7, she'll start me on symlin to help with weightloss.
