New Meter Suggestions?

It's time to replace my meter, and I was wondering if anyone had some good suggestions. Right now, I'm looking at a Bayer Contour, having found a coupon for a free meter.

If anyone has some suggestions I would appreciate it. Thanks.

If you choose to use bayer watch the ads. Walgreens just gave free $10 coupons after the meter was free with coupon. If you have to buy the meter, why not get free money with it?

I find the Ultramini pretty reliable v the Ultra.

Ultramini is the cheapest on my insurance, too. For now ...

My recommendation is call your insurance company and GET STRIP PRICES. My insurance provides ANY meter, free ... but, on or plan the One Touch Ultra strips were only 2/3 the cost of ANY other brand ... since they vary by 20% anyhow, that was the most important thing to me.

Personally I like the Accu-chek Compact Plus and the Bayer Breeze 2 but the Compact is "preferred" with my new insurance so thats the route I'm going.

I like and currently use the onetouch ultrasmart. I used to use a freestyle lite but it broke after i fellover during a hypo(long story, will tell it at another time, but it wasn't technically my fault) so have had to go back to the ultrasmart and to be honest it's better than the freestyle lite.

I had a onetouch ultrasmart; now I use a onetouch UltraMini

Love the UltraMini because its so easy to carry. The black pouch for the meter/lancet/test strips is also very small compared to the other onetouch models and still has room to hold 2 bottles of insulin and a couple syringes.

Before you do anything, do you have an Endo? I was able to get my OneTouch UltraSmart from my Endo's office for free (it would have been around $70 at a store). If you don't have an Endo, call one of the manufacturers and tell them that you are looking for a new meter and would like to sample theirs, and they'll usually ship one out free (except for the UltraSmart). OneTouch sent me an Ultra2 and an UltraMini for free, and Bayer sent me a Contour. I was also able to get a Precision Xtra and my second Accu-Chek Aviva that way.

Good luck on your search.

I have slowly replaced my Freestyle Flashes with Freestyle Lites. I have used the Flash for years and loved it. Just waiting to use up Flash strips before I retire those meters.

Love the small blood drop on both meters. The Lite requires no strip coding and is VERY fast. All meters were outright free or free after rebate.

I ended up getting a Bayer Contour. The cost was right. FREE. Now I'm waiting for a script from my doc to get more than just the 10 initial strips that it came with.

Congrats on making a meter choice. Good luck to you with it. I know I have my favorite things to work with, however I've long said that the best options for you to use... are the ones that fit your needs. If we were all brushed from the same brush, we wouldn't need 100's of brands or varieties.

Regards,

D

If you want a simple meter, I like the Accu-Check Compact Plus because it's a pretty straight forward system. I just ordered a One Touch Ultra Smart today because the Compact just didn't have enough features for me. So, hopefully it's everything I want it to be.

I finally got around to ordering a meter. Was diagnosed 6 months ago but the first doctor I saw wasn't exactly good at doling out the info. Anyway, I just ordered a Wavesense Jazz from Diabetic Care Services.

WaveSense - Jazz

My insurance doesn't cover anything, due to the high deductible plan my workplace has... so I figured since I was going to pay out of pocket I may as well do the research.

I narrowed my choices down to the OneTouch Ultra Smart and the Wavesense Jazz based upon accuracy and logging. I want a machine that keeps track of results for me and lets me keep computer records that are easy to manage. Ultimately, I chose the Jazz over the Ultra Smart because it required a smaller blood sample, isn't as picky about filling the strip first shot, and the software was easier to use.

The Ultra Smart may be a bit of overkill *grin*

I can't wait until it arrives. I'm actually looking forward to jabbing myself.

Great advice. I just called my insurance company. All brands (including store) are under the same blanket co-pay of $30. What I did not know is the dr can order up to 300 test strips per month at the blanket co-pay. Great! I just spent $100 on extra strips last month. Unfortunately, I will have to pay another co-pay if I order more since I picked up my strips last night. I have to wait until 7/17.

I need to get the dr to write a script for 2 months where I can have access to 200 test strips per month while I test food.
