| | No more. I am done with the One Touch Ultra meter I am sorry if this is a double post. I can not find the first.
This morning, I tested my postprandial (dinner) number with the Ultra. One reading was 119, 157, and 14x (approximate numbers). The Ultramini came back with 117 twice. All on the same finger, washed and dried thoroughly, and new lancets every test.
I am burning through test strips. This is the second meter too. Same issues. One Touch told me to toss the first. I guess I have extras batteries now .
Sheesh! |

| | Sorry to hear you are having issues with your Ultra meter. I love my UltraSmart, and am really looking forward to the Ping meter.
Good luck.

I loved my Aviva. Just because I don't use it as my primary meter doesn't mean I hate Accu-Chek. I don't use their meter as my primary meter because I found it not to be as accurate as a few other brands. I still use mine as a backup, though.
Accu-Chek and Lifescan both have very friendly customer service and support. I have no complaints about either company.

D | I hate that Lifescan seems to think they're secure in their spot of the number 1 meter manufacteror and therefore seem to think they can stop improving their meters. I can't think of any other explanation on why their meters take 3x as much blood as what has become the industry standard, and the most blood of any major meter on the market. I also can't think of any other reason why they'd be the only major meter that still requires coding. Abbott, Bayer, Accu-chek- they all have meters that don't require coding.
I also hate how Lifescan meters start the test the SECOND it detects any blood on the strip at all. I can't tell you how many error messages I get as a result of this, plus the larger blood sample required. I often have had to try and test 5 times to get one result.
I hate that Lifescan kind of gave Minimed users the big middle finger with their UltraLink meter. The thing is huge and a piece of ****. No backlight, a screen near impossible to read, huge size. It looks and acts like a meter that was put together with 2 days notice.
No Lifescan meters have a strip test light. What the heck is up with that? Thanks for that backlight (on some of your meters, not the UltraLink, of course...), but I still have to turn on the light to test if I can't see the strip.
I also hate that their software comes close to ideal as a logging replacement, but then you go to print the log table, and look, no times! Guess what, those glucose numbers are useless if I don't freakin' know what time I took them.
I feel like they really gave no thought to what diabetics need or want, and are giving no thought toward moving forward with their meters.
My favorite meters are Freestyle meters, but my insurance won't cover those strips any more, so I'm fairly bitter there. |

| | My OneTouch UltraMini was much more variable than my Accu-Chek Aviva, and tended to read anywhere from 10 to 20 mg/dL lower. I just never trusted the thing. Same thing with TrueTouch and TrueTest (store brands).
I have a couple of Avivas, and they at least appear to be more consistent than the others--plus, at least when I was diagnosed, Dr. Bernstein recommended the Aviva; my insurance covers Accu-Chek Aviva; I get 250 strips a month for a low co-pay; and, if I need extras--I'm a little obsessive about testing--I find it easy enough to pick up boxes of 100 online for 50 cents or so per strip.
I was wondering, though--has anyone had any experience with WaveSense? The cost of test strips seem to compare well with what Rite-Aid, Walgreens, et al. charge for their store brands. Dave Mendosa wrote a column last year praising the WaveSense Jazz to the skies.

| | | I'm using a One Touch Ultra and have had no problems with it. I use a Mini to verify if I think a reading is out of line, but so far they're always within 5 points of each other.
As for Lifescan software I agree - it's clunky. You'd think that some of the profits they glean from the outrageous price of their strips could be used to provide a more thoughtfully designed package.

| | | well ... this does not bode well! I just got an ultramini, since the strips are like 1/2 to 2/3 the Aviva strips on our policy ... AND bought the software ... urgh.
I have yet to buy strips and try the meter -- maybe need to do that, so I have some overlap time!

Have you tried the freestyle promise program?
One touch is my insurance "preference", but with the promise program, I save some $.
The program pays up to $50 a month off of your copay down to $15....So like I get mine for $50 through my insurance, but pay $15 with the program. (was paying $30 for one touch) I got my meter through my endo, and it had the card on the box. Not sure if you can sign up online or what....
I personally think my ultra mini was more accurate, but I save $ with the freestyle... and it isn't AWFUL, so I will stick with it. Plus I agree with Funnygirl, on all of her reasoning, which is why I switched in the first place...but I do think it was more accurate.

| | | Has anyone tried the TrueTrack monitor? My pharmacy gave me the monitor free and one year free supply of strips. (not all at once, as needed). All I had to do is have my physician write a prescription. The monitor is big and not all that attractive, but hey, I like free!

We have 4 of them and they are at least as good as Aviva ...
