I got this thing in the mail from the MedicAlert bracelet people...it was a coupon for the new Freestyle Mini 
so mom went to the store..and you have to buy test strips in order get it for free(doesnt really matter..cuz I have a freestyle and they use the same test strips and i was running low anyways)..and we just opened it up and its HALF the size of my old meter!! eeeeeeeeeee! now I have one I can fit in my pocket when I go out! http://www.therasense.ca/freestylemini/index.aspx |

| | Thomas just switched to the mini freestyle.
The only downfall he thought was the loud beep when testing (especially in class) but his dad figured out how to turn the beeping off, so now he loves it!

| | | i just got my one touch ultra smart for free. i was going to get $40 off with a coupon and purchase of strips and then submit the difference to my insurance company but when i phoned my drs office for a script the nurse told me "we give those away for free". i was willing to bite the bullet and pay for it (since i haven't paid for my last 5 monitors!). i'm always getting things in the mail for free upgrades from lifescan. i'm actually waiting for a another free one touch ultra in the mail that i sent away for. good to have a back up that uses the same type of strips.

It is a fantastic meter, but...
BEWARE of the velcro attachment that clips this to your belt (or wherever)! I have lost 3 of these meters because they have fallen off while traveling (doing an OJ sprint through the airport, etc.) This attachment is not to be trusted.
Fortunately, I have been able to snag another one on special at Walgreens for $29.95 with an up to $40 rebate, so I didn't even have to buy the strips to get it free.
As I said, the meter itself is terrific. Enjoy!!

ang - yeah i got my first freestyle meter for free from the Diabetic Team at the hospital. They had hundreds, cuz the companies here send them a bunch, so they came give them away to diabetics, and then the diabetics will buy their test strips lol.
statdeac - i dont trust anything that clips to my belt. the case will always be carried in my bag. |

| | | I love this meter. It is absolutely fantastic. I have gotten a couple for free with strips and after rebates and such. It's a great meter. My favorite ever. I love the lights, the size, the alternative sites, the fast test time and the small blood sample. |

My wife and I attended a diabetes seminar. Lifescan was handing out OneTouch Ultras, and we each got one.
I called my insurance company to see if they covered meters and strips. They gave me a number to call - turns out to be a promotional number for Lifescan. They asked me which insurance I had, my name and address, and asked which meter I wanted - the Ultra or the UltraSmart. My UltraSmart was shipped via FedEx and should be here Monday. 
Let's see.. One for home, one for work, one for my travel bag? Or one for home, one for my travel bag, one to carry with me? Decisions, decisions..

| | My Pharmacist gave me the freestyle mini back in Aug. I think, free(with purchase of stripes). I found in comparison to mine: mine at about 7.2 on
the mini it will say 11.6, the higher it goes the worst it gets. I use the
fast-take and love it(I have 3). I compared it to the Hospital and my Doc's
and they are with-in .6 difference which is nothing. I don't know why the
mini would be so out of it after it reaches a certain level. At normal and low levels it matches my fast-take. I can't afford to use it cause then I'd be taking too much Insulin. Maybe it was just this batch or because these are made in China. I don't know.
I also got a plastic card in the mail from One Touch wanting me to give up my fast take for the ultra because of the mg mmol/l changing or something. Well, that has never happened with mine, it's always been mmol/l. And if it
ever changed to the mg, then I would change it back to the mmol/l. Silly. Oh ya, I would also have to sign the spot on the back of the card giving rights
to One Touch of my medical records. EXCUSE ME! I THINK NOT. I complained to my Pharmacist about this card and she knows about them. She said not to worry, if I wanted an Ultra she'd give me one. No thanks.
I don't know what they are up to....doesn't sound good.

| | Over here in England I got my Accu-Chek Advantage II meter free along with 25 strips and 20 lances plus sampling pen. It came with a zip pouch that contains the meter, pen, strip container and pocket for lancets. Also there is a customer care number to call  for free replacement batteries and advice etc.
This meter uses just a small bloblet of blood and I do know that I'm lucky that I can easily get a blood sample and have the lance pen set on very nearly its minimum setting so I don't get callouses etc. in my fingers. I play the fiddle  so I take all my samples from my right hand and haven't any problems yet; if I were supersticious I would touch wood.
