I read yesterday that Bayer have now released a new meter aimed at children. It connects to a Nintendo DS.
The information from Bayer is here:
Bayer Didget - Product Information ? Bayer?s DIDGET? Blood Glucose Meter
According to Bayer this is only available in Ireland/UK, not sure why, perhaps it's something to do with the FDA in US or equivalent bodies in other countries.
I found the bit about the origin of the device to be interesting:
Quote:
Bayer's DIDGET™ meter was developed in conjunction with Paul Wessel – the parent of a child with type 1 diabetes. Paul noticed that although his son Luke was constantly losing his blood glucose meter, he could always find his Nintendo™ Game Boy. Paul left his job to become a medical technology entrepreneur and pioneer in 2000, founding his own company, Guidance Interactive Healthcare, which, with support from Nintendo, developed a product that would help his son manage his diabetes.
Nearly a decade later, Bayer, motivated by his inspiration, worked with Paul (now a Bayer Diabetes Care employee) to develop Bayer’s DIDGET™, a first-of-its-kind blood glucose meter, designed to directly address the challenges kids and their parents face when dealing with diabetes. It is the first and only blood glucose monitoring system that connects directly to Nintendo DS™ and Nintendo DS™ Lite gaming systems to help kids manage their diabetes by rewarding them for consistent testing habits.
